Non-native vascular flora of the Arctic
We present a comprehensive list of non-native vascular plants known from the Arctic, explore their geographic distribution, analyze the extent of naturalization and invasion among 23 subregions of the Arctic, and examine pathways of introductions. The presence of 341 non-native taxa in the Arctic was confirmed, of which 188 are naturalized in at least one of the 23 regions. A small number of taxa (11) are considered invasive; these plants are kno…
Taking the Universality of Human Needs Seriously
As a political theorist concerned with human emancipation I consider myself a specialist in how things ought to be, in this country, and in this world. As a social scientist, however, I am interested only in conceptions of the future that in principle appear realistically attainable, by and by, by way of reasonably non-violent strategies. This chapter will try to convince you that the idea of an evolving struggle toward a human rights world order…

Hazards of Goliath in the Nuclear Age
Since, in this nuclear age, Goliath's hazards are the hazards of the entire world, this paper examines the major irrationalities in the military defense policies of the US as well as their frightfully dangerous consequences. It also examines the arms race itself and pinpoints the varieties of irrationality and inhumanity that it feeds, especially within all the major military powers. The paper argues that as it is the US, not the USSR, that is th…

Salute to the World Assembly
The movements for peace, East and West, working under different social systems, have tended to go their separate ways. I have had my own disagreements with some policies and positions of the World Peace Council, but today such disagreements are minuscule compared to my objections to the Reagan administration's foreign policies: its support for murderous client regimes, especially in Central America (even to the remnants of Pol Pot's regime in Kam…

Self-Respect as a Human Right
Self-respect is positive side of continuum between extremes of high and low, or ambivalent, self-esteem. The term will be used in this article according to this definition. While every person is assumed to have selfesteem, whether positive, negative, or ambivalent--while everyone is assumed to esteem oneself, whether favorably, unfavorably, or ambivalently not everyone respects himself or herself as a worthwhile human being. How can it make sense…
Return of Dr. Strangelove?; I Am Misinformed; The Classic Contradiction of Capitalism
A political climate has been evolving, in which sheer madness is taken to be evidence of good political sense; paranoia seems to be on its way into the highest councils of the United States government. This article can also be found at the Monthly Review website, where most recent articles are published in full.Click here to purchase a PDF version of this article at the Monthly Review website
On Ecolacy Sans Humanism
Toward a World of Natural Communities
The paper draws a contrast between contract and community in the organization of social life in the modern world. Liberal-corporate society, based on contract, has made human beings expendable, even to the point where academic liberals will defend the sacrifice of future generations (Beckerman), or ‘undeserving’ poor nations (Hardin), or many millions of lives in a nuclear war (Kahn), all for the convenience of the present First-World generation …

The Triple Insult of Poverty
Gentleness and politics
Professionalism and the erosion of rationality in the health care field
This paper poses some fundamental, and therefore naive, questions about the purposes health care delivery systems should serve, and it analyzes the discrepant purposes our current systems do serve. After considering some general propositions from the sociology of organizations, and then some derived propositions bearing specifically on the roles of professionals today, it argues that professional dominance tends to produce results that are dysfun…

Needs, Wants, and Political Legitimacy
Politics and Pseudopolitics
A curious state of affairs has developed within the academic discipline that bravely calls itself Political Science-the discipline that in a much-quoted phrase has been called "a device, invented by university teachers, for avoiding that dangerous subject politics, without achieving science." A growing and now indeed a predominant proportion of leading American political scientists, the behavioralists, have become determined to achieve science. Y…
