    Lori M Ward, M A Bruce et al.•ARTICLE•Family & Community Health•2019

Black men who have sex with men have the greatest risk for human immunodeficiency virus infection. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is a highly effective prevention method. However, uptake in this group is extremely low. Data from a sample of 225 human immunodeficiency virus-negative young black men who have sex with men residing in Jackson, Mississippi, were analyzed to examine correlates associated with willingness to start PrEP. Consistent cond…

Although prior studies have shown that sensation seeking and impulsive decision-making are related to sexual risk-taking, it is still unclear whether these personality traits operate independently or synergistically. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the joint contribution of these personality traits to HIV and sexually transmitted disease (STD) risk behaviors using data from a large sample of sexually active young adults (N = 2,386). Re…

  • What is a planning model? An introduction to PRECEDE‐PROCEED

Open Access•Richard Crosby, Richard A Crosby et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Public Health Dentistry•2011

Planning models exist at a macroscopic level; they serve as an organizing framework for an entire health promotion effort aimed at fostering reduction in a given disease. A particularly useful, widely applied, and easy-to-follow example of a planning model is the PRECEDE-PROCEED planning model (PPM). The PPM is very much an ecological approach to health promotion. The PPM is actually quite simple to understand once one realizes that it embodies t…

Objective. We evaluated the efficacy of a brief, clinic-based, safer sex program administered by a lay health adviser for young heterosexual African American men newly diagnosed with a sexually transmitted disease (STD). Methods. Subsequent to STD diagnosis, eligible men (N = 266; aged 18–29 years) were randomized to either a personalized, single-session intervention (delivered by a lay health adviser) or standard of care. We conducted behavioral…

Dexter R Voisin, Alberto Valido et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Orthopsychiatry•2007

This study examines whether witnessing community violence, in the 12 months prior to juvenile detention, is related and health-related outcomes in the 2 months prior to being detained among 550 youth. Participants answered survey questions using audio-computer assisted self-interviewing procedures, which assessed demographic, problem, and drug and sexual risk behaviors. Multiple logistic regression analyses, controlling for significant covariates…

Data from a convenience sample of 476 detained adolescents were used to examine the relationship between family influences and biologically confirmed sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Results indicated that frequent parental monitoring was negatively associated with STD infection and that this relationship was modified by age, gender, and race. Findings suggest that STD prevention efforts for detained adolescents (particularly high-risk minor…
