A Slaves’ Revolt
Growing Up in Central Australia
Surprisingly little research has been carried out about how Australian Aboriginal children and teenagers experience life, shape their social world and imagine the future. This volume presents recent and original studies of life experiences outside the institutional settings of childcare and education, of those growing up in contemporary Central Australia or with strong links to the region. Focusing on the remote communities – roughly 1,200 across…
Animal Dreams
Animal Dreams
Animal Dreams collects David Brooks' thought-provoking essays about how humans think, dream and write about other species. Brooks examines how animals have featured in Australian literature and culture, from The Man from Snowy River to Phar Lap to contemporary debates about horse-racing, live animal exports, veganism, and the culling of native species such as kangaroos and sharks. In his piercing, elegant, widely celebrated style, he considers ho…
The Second Mountain
Conservative columnist David Brooks explores the four commitments that define a life of meaning and purpose: to a spouse and family, to a vocation, to a philosophy or faith, and to a community. Our personal fulfillment depends on how well we choose and execute these commitments. Brooks looks at a range of people who have lived joyous, committed lives, and who have embraced the necessity and beauty of dependence. He gathers their wisdom on how to …

DengueTools
Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral disease estimated to cause about 230 million infections worldwide every year, of which 25,000 are fatal. Global incidence has risen rapidly in recent decades with some 3.6 billion people, over half of the world's population, now at risk, mainly in urban centres of the tropics and subtropics. Demographic and societal changes, in particular urbanization, globalization, and increased international travel, are m…
Disraeli’s Novels
“Dizzy’s attachment to moderate Oxfordism is something like Bonaparte’s to moderate Mahomedanism’, observed George Smythe in 1842. ‘Could I only satisfy myself, wrote his fellow Young Englander, Lord John Manners, a year later, ‘that d’Israeli believed all that he said, I should be more happy: his historical views are quite mine, but does he believe them?’ As a politician, Disraeli was and remains a man of mystery, an identity which he took some …

Feral Symbolists
John Tranter recently pointed out the irony that it was he who was interested in Rimbaud and Robert Adamson who was interested in Mallarme, since all the biographical hallmarks would seem to suggest the reverse. Adamson the drug-taking ex-convict, concerned as he has been with the lawlessness of heart's desire, would appear to have far more in common with Rimbaud, the would-be visionary who argued a systematic deregulation of the senses through m…
Mexico-U.S-Canada Relations in the New World Order
We are faced today with the most pivotal moment in this country's relations with Mexico and Canada. Over the last year, we have witnessed the ongoing dialogue intended to forge a North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). This free-trade agreement would be the largest and wealthiest in the world. The United States would be entering into a free trade agreement with its first and third largest trading partners, Canada and Mexico, respectively. Th…

Caves and Karst of the Hindenburg Ranges
The expedition investigated 2500 km of rugged limestone country in the West Sepik province of Papua New Guinea, between the Strickland Gorge and the Irian Jaya border. The main objectives were the location and mapping of caves in the high altitude karst of the Hindenburg mountains and the study of their biology, hydrology and structure. Two hundred systems were recorded and some were of vast dimensions. One open pit was 280 m deep and descents we…

Swinsto Hole, Kingsdale
THE CARBONIFEROUS Limestone outcrops of the English Pennines support extensive and spectacular glaciokarst landscapes (Sweeting, 1966). Within these areas, drainage is almost entirely underground via numerous cave systems, the greatest number of which lie in the Ingleborough area of northwest Yorkshire (Waltham, 1970). The morphologies and origins of those caves divide them into a number of types, and the study of their development is complicated…
