  • Counting the costs of coalition

    Open Access•Raymond C Miller, Raymond Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Political Science•2011•Cited by: 2•References: 1

Unlike most coalition studies, which are primarily concerned with the major parties, this article focuses on the costs of coalition for small parties. As the experiences of a number of countries demonstrate, the costs of coalition are unevenly shared, with major parties generally incurring low costs and small parties high costs. This article will focus on the impact of coalitions on New Zealand’s small parliamentary parties by considering whether…

Recent elections in the English-speaking world have thrown up results that were both unpredictable and history-making. In particular, the advent of multi-party and minority government in Britain and Australia, neither of which have proportional representation, raises questions about the capacity of major parties to remain dominant, and the place of minor parties and independents in the future. Here we argue that while the idiosyncrasies of the Au…

In a two–stage referendum process, in 1992 and 1993, New Zealand voters authorised a radical change from a plurality electoral system to proportional representation. Although ad hoc groups, not the major political parties, led the debate for and against the change, the nature of the issue ensured that partisanship had a strong effect on voters’ choices. Yet many voters were also guided by their political principles and values, including fairness …

    Raymond C Miller•ARTICLE•Theory & Research in Social…•1993•Cited by: 2•References: 8

The discipline of economics has incorporated a model of the market called the neoclassical paradigm. This paradigm is based on 11 normative principles which define the culture of economics in capitalist societies. Teachers of economics are inculcating these norms in their students. Yet following these norms leads to undesirable and possibly catastrophic consequences, especially in the area of the environment; therefore, in order to save the world…
