  • The Bosnian Muslims

    Francine Friedman, Francim Friedman•BOOK•Bosnian Muslims•2018

Although their plight now dominates television news worldwide, the Bosnian Muslims were until recently virtually unknown outside of Yugoslavia. This meticulously researched, comprehensive book traces the turbulent history of the Bosnian Muslims and shows how their mixed secular and religious identity has shaped the conflict in which they are now so tragically embroiled. Although their plight now dominates television news worldwide, the Bosnian Mu…

The contemporary Croat‐Serb conflict is the result of long‐standing misconceptions, competing historical claims, and political cynicism. Nevertheless, it was possible to anticipate the basic outlines of the outcome of this conflict even before the negotiations had begun and even though the driving force of the conflict appeared to have been the allegedly irrational force of nationalism. Expected utility analysis applied to expert evaluations of i…

  • Fighting in Bosnia

    Francine Friedman, Theodora-Ismene Gizelis et al.•ARTICLE•International Interactions•1997

The military conflict over the future of Bosnia was long and vicious. In this article we analyze the negotiation period over two years utilizing the expected utility model. We demonstrate the merits of modeling in capturing the dynamics of the bargaining process. We show that the progressive shift in American policies was the catalyst that led to the Dayton agreement. We conclude that if the United States maintains an active role, the local actor…
