  • Reinforcement and the Origin, Rate, and Extent of Cultural Diffusion

    Robert L Hamblin, Jerry L L Miller et al.•CHAPTER•Behavioral Theory in Sociology•2021

This chapter investigates how reinforcement influences the “origin,” rate, and extent of one large-scale social-change process—cultural diffusion. The investigation uses Zvi Griliches’s data on the adoption of hybrid corn by farmers in the Midwestern and Southern states and builds upon the logistic analyses that Griliches did of those data. In contrast, energy input into a social system is a function of relative benefits or reinforcement. Reinfor…

  • Conclusion

    Robert L Hamblin, John H Kunkel•CHAPTER•Behavioral Theory in Sociology•2021

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book investigates bargaining processes in varied exchange networks. It assumes that bargaining power is inversely related to dependency, which in part is a function of available alternatives, as determined by the centrality of a person’s position in an exchange network. The book starts out by questioning some assumptions implic…

  • Behavior and Reinforcement: A Generalization of the Matching Law

    Robert L Hamblin•CHAPTER•Behavioral Theory in Sociology•2021

Over the past fifteen years Homans’s frequency and value propositions have been used many times either explicitly or implicitly in making theoretical predictions and explanations in sociology. Mathematical equations are much more accurate than verbal statements as descriptors of causal relationships among two or more variables, and mathematical logic is much more powerful than verbal logic. By moving from verbal to mathematical formulations it ma…

  • Anomie and Deviance

    Robert L Hamblin, Paul V Crosbie•CHAPTER•Behavioral Theory in Sociology•2021

One of the simplest is to think of deviance as behavior in violation of a verbal norm of a particular social system. Consequently, it is simpler to think of deviance as occurring in one of two ways in a social system—the extent to which behaviors are missing that facilitate the achievement of the system goals and the degree to which behavior is present that disrupts or works against the system goals. The anomie-deviance hypothesis is about steady…

  • Collective Learning in Ongoing Political Conflicts

    Open Access•Brian L Pitcher, Robert L Hamblin•ARTICLE•International Political Science…•1982•Cited by: 3

Analyses of political conflict typically concentrate on various structural dimensions and neglect the underlying dynamic processes. In this research, we depart from that practice and take the collective learning process inherent in large-scale and ongoing social conflict as our focus. A mathematical model and its theoretical rationale are developed and evaluated. The model, derived from well-grounded behavioral propositions, assumes that the tren…

  • The Classic Maya Collapse: Testing Class Conflict Hypotheses

    Open Access•Robert L Hamblin, Brian L Pitcher•ARTICLE•American Antiquity•1980•Cited by: 15•References: 12

Several lines of archaeological evidence are presented in this paper to suggest the existence of class warfare among the Classic Maya and of issues that historically have been associated with class conflict. This evidence indicates that class warfare may have halted the rule of the monument-producing, or Classic, elites and precipitated the depopulation of the lowland area. The theory is evaluated quantitatively by testing for time-related mathem…

Based on scaling analysis and computation we find that non-Newtonian duct flowshave several limit behaviours, in the sense that such flows can become (nearly) independent of one or moreof the rheological and dynamical control parameters, simplifying the general flow and mixing problem. • Behavioral Theory in Sociology: Essays in Honor of George C. Homans

    James W Michaels, Robert L Hamblin et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•1978•Cited by: 3

This book is designed to honor George Caspar Homans for his many and varied contributions to the development of modern sociology. The chapters have been written by sociologists and psychologists who value his work sufficiently to have made his basic approach their own. These original essays are intended to elucidate, assess, and give a progress report on the theoretical tradition Homans founded and to which he has given such significant impetus

  • Arms Races: A Test of Two Models

    Robert L Hamblin, M Hout et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1977•Cited by: 12

This is an investigation of two models of arms races: Lewis F. Richardson's linear, additive, symmetric model and a curvilinear, asymmetric alternative based on the same interaction paradigm but with empirical equations from psychophysical experiments on perception as premises. Two hypotheses derived from each model are tested using data from seven arms races. In general, the data give stronger support to the curvilinear, asymmetric model which p…

  • Reinforcement and the Origin, Rate and Extent of Cultural Diffusion

    Robert L Hamblin, Jerry L L Miller et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•1976•Cited by: 1

Cultural diffusion occurs as a logistic process and the dependent variables in this investigation are origin, rate and asymptotes from logistic equations which were fitted by Zvi Griliches to through-time data on the adoption of hybrid corn in each of 132 crop-reporting districts. In multiplicative power functions measures, actual reinforcement to farmers explained 57 percent of the variance in the rate of adoption, expected reinforcement to farm…

    June A Hamblin, Robert L Hamblin•ARTICLE•American Educational Research…•1972•References: 2

A number of experiments have indicated that the rate at which children learn to read may be accelerated via token reinforcement with material backups (Hamblin, Buckholdt, Ferritor, Kozloff, and Blackwell, 1971; Pfeiffer, 1969; Staats and Staats, 1963; Wolf, Giles, and Hall, 1968). In other experiments the rate of learning to read has been accelerated by using more able pupils who are succeeding at reading to help those who are achieving poorly (H…

  • Mathematical Experimentation and Sociological Theory: A Critical Analysis

    Robert L Hamblin•ARTICLE•Sociometry•1971•Cited by: 17

The purpose of this paper is to suggest a serious problem with empirically based theory in sociology (low explained variance, on the average about 10 percent), a probable reason for that problem (traditional methodology) and a possible solution (mathematical experimentation and correlation). Data are reviewed from a number of mathematical experiments and correlational studies-of status, group learning, gambling, and voting. All of these involved …

  • Some Effects of Close and Punitive Styles of Supervision

    Robert C Day, Robert L Hamblin•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1964•Cited by: 12

An experiment based on a two-by-two factorial design was conducted to test hypotheses involving the relationship of four supervisory styles to aggressive feelings and actions of subordinates. The supervisory styles were arrayed on two continuums: the close versus general and the punitive versus non-punitive. Close as compared with general supervision produced significant increases in aggressive feelings toward the supervisor and in indirect aggre…

Local status among graduate students increased as teaching ability and professorial demeanor (outside the classroom) increased.
