Orlando Gibbons and the Gibbons Family of Musicians
First published in 1999, this volume is the first full-length study to deal with the life and music of Orlando Gibbons since E.H. Fellowes’s short book, originally published in 1923. John Harley investigates in detail the family and musical background from which Orlando Gibbons emerged, and gives a fascinating account of the activities of his father, William Gibbons, as a wait in Oxford and Cambridge. He traces, too, the activities of Orlando’s b…
My Ladye Nevell' Revealed
My Ladye Nevells Book is a manuscript of keyboard music by William Byrd, dated 1591. Its exceptional importance has long been recognized, but ‘Ladye Nevell’ has never been firmly identified. However, the only person to whom the title could correctly have been applied in 1591 was Elizabeth, the wife of Sir Henry Nevell of Billingbere (c.1518–93); and fresh examination of the arms represented in the book has confirmed that they are Sir Henry’s. Eli…

The Law of Angary
The origin of the right of angary is traceable to early Roman times, and a study of its origin and development throws much light on the right as it is understood today. Several writers on international law refer to the first chapter, 41st verse, of Saint Matthew’s Gospel, as showing a possible origin of the term angary. This verse reads: Quicumque te angariaverit mille passus, vade cum illo et alia duo . (And whosoever shall compel thee to go one…
