A Value-Based Community Assessment Process: Integrating Quality of Life and Social Impact Studies
It is argued that community quality of life and social impact studies are similar in nature and can be integrated with a common analytical model for conducting community assessments. All such assessments must incorporate the basic values prevailing in the community, as expressed by community leaders and various segments of the population. Community assessments must also include both objective and subjective procedures, as neither approach is mean…

Consumers' Attitudes Toward Energy Conservation
Many surveys indicate that about half of all Americans believe that the energy problem is real and serious, and less than one‐fourth are completely unconvinced of the problem. Large proportions of the public also support relatively strong conservation policies, especially if they feel personally responsible for helping solve the problem and hold a broad environmental ethic. The latter values, which are linked with ideas of “voluntary simplicity,”…

Three Routes To Political Party Participation
PARTICIPATION in political party activities has been investigated by numerous researchers in recent years, but most of these studies have examined only party leaders such as precinct committeemen and county chairmen.' A few studies have focused on volunteer party workers2 or party members (in Europe) ,3 but virtually none have covered the full range of party participation. Moreover, most of this previous research has focused on the motivations or…

Social Classes in Contemporary Sweden
Survey data from Gavle, Sweden, are examined to determine whether the three Swedish occupational groups reflect actual social classes. Analyses reveal that (a) occupational status is heavily influenced by educational attainment; (b) education and amount and source of income all differ significantly among the three social groups; (c) upward generational occupational mobility is largely restricted to the top two groups; (d) Sweden is generally perc…

Social Participation and Voting Turnout: A Multivariate Analysis
As an explanation of voting turnout, the theory argues that involvement by individuals in nonpolitical organizations such as voluntary associations community affairs, and churches will in turn mobilize them to become politically active. Survey data from Indianapolis show marked correlations between all the above forms of and voting turnout in three recent elections. The partial correlations for each of these measures, controlling the others, rema…
Socioeconomic-Ethnic Status Inconsistency and Preference for Political Change
Although there have been numerous empirical tests of Lenski's proposition that statusinconsistent persons tend to favor political change more than consistent persons, three critical issues remain unresolved: (1) Do all forms of status inconsistency have such consequences, or just the pattern of low ascribed but high achieved status? (2) Which kinds of political attitudes and behaviors, if any, are actually affected by status inconsistency? (3) Do…

The Science and Profession of Involved Sociology
Much has been said and written in recent years about making sociology relevant, the myth of value-free sociology, and ap plying sociology to policy formation. The central issue being debated in all these discussions is the role of sociology in contem porary society. What should sociologists be doing?both individually and collectively? I shall make no attempt in this brief essay to impar tially review or assess all of the arguments that have been …
Social and Political Participation of Blacks
Recent research has suggested that although blacks often participate less actively than whites in voluntary associations and voting, when socioeconomic status is controlled this relationship is reversed, with blacks becoming more active than whites. The present study expands this line of research into a wide variety of social and political activities, and also adds age as a second control variable. The general tendency for blacks to be more activ…

Perceived Legitimacy of Social Protest Actions
A scale to measure the extent to which respondents grant legitimacy to various types of social protest actions—such as strikes, sit-ins, and demonstrations—was devised and tested in a population composed largely of “upper-middle class” urban whites. Education, occupation, and income were all directly correlated with acceptance of protest activities, age was inversely related, men were more accepting than women, Democrats more than Independents or…

Motion Picture Attendance and Social Isolation
It is hypothesized that a major cause of movie attendance is social isolation, which is measured by population increase, percentage of the population changing houses, and an urbanism index. Fairly high product-moment correlations are found between each of the two population mobility measures and movie attendance; the combined multiple correlation is even higher. Adding the urbanism index to this multiple correlation increases it only slightly. Si…
