Field Work
For decades now, scholars specializing in imperial history and decolonization have traced the relationships between the social sciences and European imperial control. 1 Indeed, many scholars working in postcolonial veins now take for granted the deep connections between empire and forms of knowledge production and knowledge legitimization.Imperial control over territory provided privileged spaces and populations for the practice of social science…
The influence of financial practice in developing mathematical probability
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the role of financial practice in the development of mathematics as applied in human judgement. The basis of the paper is in historical research from the 1990s that argues that the monetisation of western commerce, which abstracted value into quantified price, was synthesised with scholastic analysis resulting in a “mathematical mechanistic world picture” that led to the widespread use of mathematics in sci…
Long-term trends in anthropogenic land use in Siberia and the Russian Far East
As globally important forested areas situated in a context of dramatic socio-economic changes, Siberia and the Russian Far East (RFE) are important regions to monitor for anthropogenic land-use trends. Therefore, we compiled decadal Landsat-derived land-cover and land-use data for eight dominantly rural case study sites in these regions and focused on trends associated with settlements, agriculture, logging, and roads 1975–2010. Several key spati…

The Role of Land in Temperate and Tropical Agriculture
We document differences in the elasticity of agricultural output with respect to land in temperate and tropical regions. We estimate this elasticity from the relationship of rural labour/land ratios and agroclimatic constraints using global district‐level data. We find that the elasticity in temperate areas (0.285) is higher than in the tropics (0.126), and that this is not an artefact of the level of development. The land elasticity influences t…

A National Survey of Tobacco Cessation Programs for Youths
Objectives. We collected data on a national sample of existing community-based tobacco cessation programs for youths to understand their prevalence and overall characteristics. Methods. We employed a 2-stage sampling design with US counties as the first-stage probability sampling units. We then used snowball sampling in selected counties to identify administrators of tobacco cessation programs for youths. We collected data on cessation programs w…
The Relation Between Culture and Response Styles
The authors investigated at the country level the effects of four cultural orientations identified and studied by Hofstede on two commonly recognized response biases: extreme response style and acquiescent responding. Data are presented from approximately 18,000 survey questionnaires completed by employees in 19 nations on five continents (Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Czech Republic, Germany, Hungary, India, Japan, Malaysia, Portugal, Turkey, the …
Delaying Justice
Some of the Supreme Court’s most famous cases—from Roe v. Wade (1973) to Brown v. Board of Education (1954)—have been decided only after being held over and argued a second time. While few cases take this path, scholars have offered no systematic account for why the Court would ever take such a tack. We develop hypotheses about when reargument is most likely to occur, and test them on all formally decided cases between 1946 and 1985. More specifi…
Prediction of Depressive Distress in a Community Sample of Women
Objectives. This study compared factors known or hypothesized to influence depressive symptomatology in a community sample of lesbians and heterosexual women. Methods. Data were collected in a multisite survey of lesbians' physical and mental health. Results. Findings confirmed earlier reports suggesting that traumatic life events such as physical and sexual abuse, and individual traits and coping styles are risk factors for depressive distress. …

The Claim of Issue Creation on the U.S. Supreme Court
We argue that a variant of the sua sponte doctrine, namely, the practice disfavoring the creation of issues not raised in the legal record, is a norm with substantial consequences for the U.S. Supreme Court. Without it, justices would act considerably more like legislators, who are free to engage in “issue creation,” and less like jurists, who must wait for issues to come to them. Yet, McGuire and Palmer claim that justices engage in issue creati…
The Computer Presentation of Musical Research
The traditional format for the presentation of musical research, the journal article, makes referencing musical passages less direct than ideally desired. CD-ROM technology provides a means for the presentation of written comments and analytical sketches simultaneously with a recorded performance of the corresponding music. This article describes a computer project that uses CD-ROM technology to bridge the gap between analytical or theoretical co…
