Sarah Carnochan, Chris Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Evidence-Based Social…•2013

Despite the federal emphasis on achieving timely permanency for children who enter foster care, some children continue to remain in foster care for extended periods, with approximately 20,000 children a year “aging out” of foster care into adulthood without having achieved permanency in a family setting (Dworsky, 2008 Dworsky, A. 2008. “Transitions to adulthood among youth “aging out” of care: What have we learned?.”. • Building Organizational Supports for Research-Minded Practitioners

    Michael J Austin, Teresa S Dal Santo et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Evidence-Based Social…•2012•Cited by: 14•References: 1

One of the biggest challenges facing human service organizations is the proliferation of information from inside and outside the agency that needs to be managed if it is to be of use. The concepts of tacit and explicit knowledge can inform an approach to this challenge. Tacit knowledge is stored in the minds of practitioners (often called practice wisdom) and the explicit knowledge is often found in organizational procedure manuals and educationa…

  • The Farc and the Colombian Left

    Open Access•Chris Lee•ARTICLE•Latin American Perspectives•2012•Cited by: 1•References: 8

Is the FARC (Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias de Colombia-Ejército del Pueblo [Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People's Army]) merely a terrorist organization involved in narcotrafficking and the predatory tactics of survival, or does it represent a legitimate political movement or alternative? Should the Colombian left sever any ties to the FARC, or should it attempt to integrate it into the political process? These questions are particula…

  • Sociological Theories of Immigration

Chris Lee•ARTICLE•Journal of Human Behavior in the…•2009•Cited by: 12•References: 20

This literature review examines major theoretical frameworks utilized by sociologists in examining the processes by which immigrants are incorporated into a host society. Beginning with classical assimilation theory in the 1920s, theorists defined the incorporation process as a linear path for all immigrants, regardless of group characteristics or social context. The responsibility for change was placed solely on the immigrant group. By the 1960s…

In an attempt to address this issue, a brief overview of some of the major theories of immi…

Open Access•Paul Farrand, Maureen Parker et al.•ARTICLE•Health & Social Care in the…•2007•Cited by: 1•References: 2

Much is known about adolescent help seeking for severe mental health problems. Little is currently understood about the professionals that adolescents would seek help from for milder emotional and behavioural difficulties. A self-report questionnaire was completed by 968 adolescents (53% male), aged 13-14 years in school year 9, and 15-16 years in school year 11 (64% male), attending a purposive sample of four medium to large secondary schools in…

  • The Contributions of Activity and Occupation to Young Children's Comprehension of Picture Books

Christopher J Lee, Chris Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Occupational Science•2003•References: 4

This article provides an empirical examination of current conceptions of activity and occupation by analyzing factors affecting children's comprehension of a picture book. Childhood activities are depicted prominently in picture books, and given that children are believed to rely extensively on personal experience when interpreting stories, it is reasonable to expect children's experience of engaging in these activities to play an important role …

  • The Differential Role of Ridicule in Sarcasm and Irony

Christopher J Lee, Chris Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Metaphor and Symbol•1998

Kreuz and Glucksberg (1989) argued that sarcasm and irony are similar in that both are forms of reminder, yet different in that sarcasm conveys ridicule of a specific victim whereas irony does not. This article reports two experiments that provide empirical evidence of this relation. In both experiments, undergraduates read a series of passages. One group rated a target utterance in terms of the extent to which it was a good example of sarcasm, a…

  • The Role of Authorial Intent in Determining Verbal Irony and Metaphor

Albert N Katz, Christopher J Lee et al.•ARTICLE•Metaphor and Symbolic Activity•1993

Three groups of participants rated the authorial intent to endorse or reject the truth-value, the degree of irony, or metaphoricity of target utterances contained in brief anecdotes. Target utterances could be interpreted either literally or figuratively; a figurative resemblance was suggested by having the utterance echo an earlier usage. The anecdotes manipulated (a) congruence of the utterance with observational fact and (b) audience type. Typ…

Open Access•Chris Lee, Jack Adams‐Webber et al.•ARTICLE•Social Behavior and Personality…•1987

The overall proportion of cartoon figures which they assigned to the positive poles of constructs (e.g., ge…
