The declaration of independence in 1948 was an immediate expression of the fundamental Zionist idea: it gave effect to a plan advocated by organized Zionists since the 1880s for solving the Jewish Problem. Thus, major Israeli political institutions, such as the party structure, embody principles and practices that were followed in the World Zionist Organiz…

A Clash of Heroes: Brandeis, Weizmann, and American Zionism
This book examines the conflict between Louis D. Brandeis and Chaim Weizmann, two dominant personalities, each credited by devoted followers as the hero of a crucial era in recent Jewish history. The author considers how each man confronted the problem of his Jewish identity and the extent to which they both served as models for rival solutions.

Myth" and "Ideology" in Modern Usage
Myth and ideology are closely related conceptions which enjoy a wide, and accordingly a very loose, usage in our time. Elsewhere I have employed these terms as the central conceptions of a systematic approach to the historical aspects of culture. Thus, it is not simply a lexicographical exercise if, in the present paper, an attempt is made to reduce the rather confusing popular and technical usages of these words to some fundamental common denomi…

History, Sociology, and Contemporary Area Studies
Contemporary life requires both historic and sociological analysis, but neither discipline is fully adapted for the task. History legitimately demands historic perspective, and its latent generalizations are selected by uncontrolled intuition. Sociology is rigorous in generalizing, but its assumption of the integral group as the limit and norm of systematic change restricts and misleads historic analysis. In order to retain methodologial rigor an…
