Assessing the Linkage of Norms, Environments, and Deviance
Panel data from a study of adolescent drinking practices are used to study the relationship of norms, deviance, and social environments. Using these data, a test is made of contrasting perspectives which differentially emphasize the extent of individual activity in the construction and maintenance of social order. The normative paradigm emphasizes the impact on individual behavior of normative structures and the groups with which individuals have…

On What Is Learned in School
Negroes, Education, and the Southern States
The educational attainments of Negroes in the southern states are, compared to whites, exceedingly poor, and justly a condition for national concern and remediation. But evidence is presented that interracial differences in educational facilities and accomplishments are not decidedly more pronounced in the South than in the nation, and the question of why this fact has been largely hidden is discussed. The argument is advanced that educational co…
Social Factors in Educational Achievement and Aspirations among Negro Adolescents
Balance Forces and Environmental Effects
This paper analyzes factors affecting the internal structure of affective relationships in triads formed by adolescent male drinkers and abstainers. It is shown that the likelihood of a given sociometric relation can be predicted from knowledge of other relational bonds in the triad and from the degree of similarity with regard to alcohol use. The relations between two individuals are affected importantly by their own behaviors and also by their …

The Middle-Class Negro in the White Man's World
Peer Influences on Adolescent Drinking
Questionnaires on drinking behavior and attitudes were completed by 1,410 white male seniors from 30 urban and rural high schools in the eastern and Piedmont sections of North Carolina. In these regions the major religious denominations vigorously promote total abstinence; although over one-third of the subjects reported drinking to some extent, 65% believed drinking was wrong as a matter of principle, including 40% of the drinkers. The study con…

Structural Effects and Interpersonal Relationships
It is proposed that structural effects be analyzed with a two-step model that employs structural variables to predict the relevant characateristics of an indvidual's social environment and then explains his behaviors in terms of a social-psychological theory whose predictions take these conditions of the social environment as given. Data on the educational aspirations of adolescents are consistent with this analytic approach: The average socioeco…
The Internalization of Moral Norms
Peer Influences on Adolescent Educational Aspirations and Attainments
The educational aspirations and attainments of 1,401 male seniors in 30 high schools were examined in terms of the aspirations and achievements of their sociometric choices. In support of hypothesized tendencies toward balance, we observed that a student at a given level of parental education is more likely to expect to attend college, to have a strong desire to go to college when he does expect to go, to want to go when he does not expect to go,…
Scale and Intensity Analysis in the Study of Attitude Change
In studies of attitude change, it is important to be able to distinguish those changes of attitude which leave the respondent essentially on the same side of the issue from those in which his attitude changes from favorable to unfavorable or vice versa. Guttman scale theory provides a “zero point” to mark the point of indifference in single determinations of attitude. When this is applied to studies of attitude change, there are zero points in ea…

Racial and Moral Crisis
Three reference systems-the self, the professional, and the membership-are variables bearing on behavior in moral dilemmas. These are used to explain the apparent inconsistency between attitude and behavior of ministers in the racial crisis current in Little Rock, Arkansas. Centrain institutional characteristics compelled the minister to give a peaceable atmosphere in his congregation precedence over social reform. Certain institutional arrangeme…

Two-Party Voting in the South
This study was undertaken to test the relations between two basic observations which have appeared in the literature of political behavior. First, party identification has been found to be a major factor not only in determining votes but also in shaping ideology. Party appears to serve a "standard-setting" function for its adherents, especially on questions that are most clearly "party-related," and resultant ideological differences between Democ…

"A Critique of the Concept "Universe of Attributes
This article is a discussion of what the authors believe to be a major shortcoming of a scale theory based on the “universe of attributes” concept. They contend that scale analysis provides information about both unidimensionality and content when the items scale, but that little can be said about the items which do not scale except that the content is not unidimensional

Internalization of a Moral Norm and External Supports
A growing theoretical and empirical literature in recent years is concerned with the problems of conformity and deviance in modern society.' This literature supports the position that such loosely descriptive concepts as the folkways and the mores are in themselves inadequate as an approach to the study of social control; the normative structure of our society is simply too heterogeneous. Though we can demonstrate reliable differences in value sy…
