  • Urban–Rural Disparities in Case Fatality of Community-Acquired Sepsis in Germany

    Open Access•Claudia T Matthaeus-Kraemer, Norman Rose et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2023

Rural residence is associated with short- and long-term survival benefits in patients with community-acquired sepsis. Further research on patient, community, and health-care system factors is needed to understand the causative mechanisms of these disparities

  • Psychometric properties of the Reintegration to Normal Living Index for sepsis survivors

Open Access•Kathleen Streich, Christiane S Hartog et al.•ARTICLE•Quality of Life Research•2023

Purpose Return to a normal state of living is a key patient-relevant outcome for sepsis survivors. The Reintegration to Normal Living Index (RNLI) assesses self-perceived participation in patients with chronic disease, but its psychometric properties have been analyzed neither for patients after sepsis nor in a German patient cohort. This study aims to analyze the psychometric properties of the German version of the RNLI in sepsis survivors. Meth…

  • Association between sepsis incidence and regional socioeconomic deprivation and health care capacity in Germany – an ecological study

    Open Access•Norman Rose, Claudia Matthäus‐Krämer et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

Residence in districts with lower socioeconomic status (e.g., less education) and further distance to pharmacies are both associated with an increased sepsis incidence. This warrants further research with individual-level patient data to better model and understand such dependencies and to ultimately design public health interventions to address the burden of sepsis in Germany

  • Cross-Domain Trajectories of Students’ Ability Self-Concepts and Intrinsic Values in Math and Language Arts

Open Access•Hanna Gaspard, Fani Lauermann et al.•ARTICLE•Child Development•2020

Different cross-domain trajectories in the development of students’ ability self-concepts (ASCs) and their intrinsic valuing of math and language arts were examined in a cross-sequential study spanning Grades 1 through 12 (n = 1,069). Growth mixture modeling analyses identified a Moderate Math Decline/Stable High Language Arts class and a Moderate Math Decline/Strong Language Arts Decline class for students’ ASC trajectories. Students’ intrinsic …

  • The development of narcissistic admiration and machiavellianism in early adulthood

Michael P Grosz, Richard Göllner et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Personality and Social…•2019•Cited by: 5

We investigated the development of narcissistic admiration (i.e., the assertive or extraverted dimension of narcissism; Back et al., 2013) and Machiavellianism (Mach) in early adulthood. Specifically, we examined (a) mean-level changes in narcissistic admiration and Mach during early adulthood and (b) how studying economics and experiencing any of 30 life events were related to individual differences in changes in narcissistic admiration and Mach…

  • A Simulation Study on Methods of Correcting for the Effects of Extreme Response Style

Open Access•Eunike Wetzel, Jan R Böhnke et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2016

The impact of response styles such as extreme response style (ERS) on trait estimation has long been a matter of concern to researchers and practitioners. This simulation study investigated three methods that have been proposed for the correction of trait estimates for ERS effects: (a) mixed Rasch models, (b) multidimensional item response models, and (c) regression residuals. The methods were compared with respect to their ability of recovering …

  • Dealing With Omitted and Not-Reached Items in Competence Tests

Open Access•Steffi Pohl, Linda Gräfe et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•2014

Data from competence tests usually show a number of missing responses on test items due to both omitted and not-reached items. Different approaches for dealing with missing responses exist, and there are no clear guidelines on which of those to use. While classical approaches rely on an ignorable missing data mechanism, the most recently developed model-based approaches account for nonignorable missing responses. Model-based approaches include th…

  • A Cautious Note on Auxiliary Variables That Can Increase Bias in Missing Data Problems

Felix Thoemmes, Norman Rose•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•2014

The treatment of missing data in the social sciences has changed tremendously during the last decade. Modern missing data techniques such as multiple imputation and full-information maximum likelihood are used much more frequently. These methods assume that data are missing at random. One very common approach to increase the likelihood that missing at random is achieved consists of including many covariates as so-called auxiliary variables. These…

  • Theory and Analysis of Total, Direct, and Indirect Causal Effects

A Mayer, Felix Thoemmes et al.•ARTICLE•Multivariate Behavioral Research•2014

Mediation analysis, or more generally models with direct and indirect effects, are commonly used in the behavioral sciences. As we show in our illustrative example, traditional methods of mediation analysis that omit confounding variables can lead to systematically biased direct and indirect effects, even in the context of a randomized experiment. Therefore, several definitions of causal effects in mediation models have been presented in the lite…

    Open Access•Norman Rose•ARTICLE•The Historical Journal•1982•Cited by: 2•References: 9

On Sunday 20 February 1938, Anthony Eden, accompanied by the cheers of the waiting crowd, left the foreign office for an emergency cabinet session. That same evening he tendered his resignation as foreign secretary. Ten years later Churchill recollected his feelings on learning of the news

    Open Access•Norman Rose•ARTICLE•The Historical Journal•1971•References: 2

As a result of the Great War, the Zionist movement came of age. For the first time since its inception as a political organization, Zionism gained a backer of international and worldwide repute. The political charter which Herzl had hawked around the chancelleries of Europe found its consummation in the Balfour Declaration. The British Empire, in its moment of supreme crisis, stamped its seal of approval on the concept of a Jewish National Home i…
