The Cambridge History of Religions in Latin America covers religious history in Latin America from pre-Conquest times until the present. This publication is important; first, because of the historical and contemporary centrality of religion in the life of Latin America; second, for the rapid process of religious change which the region is undergoing; and third, for the region's religious distinctiveness in global comparative terms, which contribu…

    Open Access•Virginia Garrard-Burnett, Virginia Garrard‐burnett•ARTICLE•Latin American Perspectives•2015•Cited by: 8•References: 8

Although more than three decades have passed since Guatemala's 36-year-long civil war, bereavement and posttraumatic stress continue to affect many survivors of that dark era, especially since it is only now that a few of the most infamous perpetrators of the violence have recently, if briefly, been brought to justice. The Maya were especially severely affected by the massacres and disappearances of the armed conflict. Because the ongoing relatio…

  • Terror in the Land of the Holy Spirit

Virginia Garrard-Burnett, Virginia Garrard‐burnett•BOOK•Terror in the land of the Holy…•2009

This work discusses the period now known in Guatemala as la violencia, when the military government under General Efraín Ríos Montt (1982–1983) prosecuted a scorched‐earth campaign against the Mayan people in the name of anticommunism. Although tens of thousands of people died in the “Mayan holocaust,” Ríos Montt was, and is, a born‐again Pentecostal, a fact that would seem to be at odds with the atrocities that took place on his watch. This book…

Social transformations in Brazil in recent years have included a substantial increase in adolescent fertility, a dramatic rise in membership of Protestant religious denominations, and an accompanying decline in the number of Catholics. We used the 2000 Brazil Census to examine differentials in fertility and family formation among adolescents living in Rio de Janeiro by the following religious denominations: Catholic; Baptist; other mainline Prote…

  • Protestantism(s) and Mayan Worldviews in Chiapas and Guatemala in the Context of Civil Violence

    Virginia Garrard-Burnett, Virginia Garrard‐burnett et al.•ARTICLE•Social Sciences and Missions•2007

This article discusses religious change among the Maya population in the violence-torn regions of highland Chiapas and Guatemala, and observes how this changes brings to bear on indigenous perceptions of ethnic and community identity. The focus is primarily upon Protestant conversion among the Maya, not only because it is dynamic, in that it is the movement which involves a large number of converts, but also because it also seems, at least superf…

  • Misioneros y civilizadores: Protestantismo y modernización en el Perú (1915-1930)

    Virginia Garrard-Burnett, Virginia Garrard‐burnett•ARTICLE•Hispanic American Historical Review•2005

This study explores, as its title implies, the impact of the Protestant missionary movement in Peru, primarily during the second administration of liberal, reformist president Augusto B. Leguía. It is groundbreaking in being one of the first (in an admittedly scant historiography) to examine the missionary movement in Peru from a Peruvian perspective. The bulk of the literature, as Fonseca Ariza notes, falls into two categories: (1) ideological a…

  • Protestantism in Guatemala: Living in the New Jerusalem

    Virginia Garrard-Burnett, Virginia Garrard‐burnett•BOOK•Protestantism in Guatemala•1998

Guatemala has undergone an unprecedented conversion to Protestantism since the 1970s, so that thirty percent of its people now belong to Protestant churches, more than in any other Latin American nation. To illuminate some of the causes of this phenomenon, Virginia Garrard-Burnett here offers the first history of Protestantism in a Latin American country, focusing specifically on the rise of Protestantism within the ethnic and political history o…

    Open Access•Virginia Garrard-Burnett, Virginia Garrard‐burnett•ARTICLE•Latin American Perspectives•1997•Cited by: 5•References: 7

Protestant missionaries came to Guatemala in the ideological vanguard of Justo Rufino Barrios's Liberal reform in the 1880s. Their work would be intimately linked to Liberal politics through the administration of Guatemala's most enduring dictator, Manuel Estrada Cabrera, who stepped down in 1920 after nearly a quarter of a century in power. Liberalism, positivism, Social Darwinism, and Protestantism became the social tools with which the Liberal…
