Parent–child discrepancies in educational expectations and depressive symptoms among Chinese middle school adolescents
Using data from the China Education Panel Survey ( N = 9226), this study aims to explore the association between parent–child discrepancies in educational expectations and depressive symptoms in Chinese middle school adolescents with academic self-efficacy as a mediator and gender as a moderator. Are the Effects of Poor Survey Measurement of Sexual Identity on Estimated Associations between Sexual Identity and Health-Related Measures Moderated by the State-Level Policy Environment
Including a "something else" response option for survey questions about sexual identity significantly moderates estimated differences between sexual identity subgroups in terms of behaviors and attitudes reported in U.S. health surveys. We hypothesize that these moderation effects will be larger in states with negative policies that fail to protect sexual minorities from discrimination. We tested this hypothesis by linking public-use data from th…

Chinese reluctance to report crime
Rising crime rates and strained police–community relations in China are calling for more research on people’s crime-reporting desires and associated predictors. Drawing upon survey data collected from a sample of 757 local and nonlocal residents in a large city in Southern China, this study takes the initiative to assess Chinese people’s reluctance to report crime to the police. Results show that a lower level of political efficacy, external effi…
Molar crown formation times of fossil orangutan molars from Guangxi, China
OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate molar enamel development in fossil orangutans from Guangxi and shed light on the evolution of Asian great apes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected 32 fossil orangutan molars, most of which were from Guangxi apothecaries and the Guangxi Daxin Heidong cave, and prepared histological sections of each molar. We then characterized aspects of dental development, including long period line periodicity, number of Retz…
The genetic assimilation in language borrowing inferred from Jing People
OBJECTIVES: The Jing people are a recognized ethnic group in Guangxi, southwest China, who are the immigrants from Vietnam during the 16th century. They speak Vietnamese but with lots of language borrowings from Cantonese, Zhuang, and Mandarin. However, it's unclear if there is large-scale gene flow from surrounding populations into Jing people during their language change due to the very limited genetic information of this population. MATERIALS …
The impact of Chinese political efficacy and political participation on their trust in the police
In English literature, the study of the public’s evaluation of the police has been increasing in the past 10 years. Although the existing literature has talked about the influence of political participation on the trust of the police, it has not been studied from the perspective of political efficacy and political participation of the police. Based on the data of the Chinese General Social Survey (CGSS) 2010, this paper studies the influence of t…
Public Assessments of the Police in Rural and Urban China
Although the past decade has witnessed the burgeoning of studies on Chinese evaluations of the police, several issues remain under-addressed, including the perceptions of rural residents, the multidimensional nature of assessments of the police, and the effects of social and political activities. This study addresses these concerns by analysing data collected from both rural and urban China. Contrary to Western evidence, villagers were found to d…
