Sinners All
Paul Cadmus’s small and lurid series The Seven Deadly Sins (1945–49, Metropolitan Museum of Art) seems an odd choice for an artist who had repudiated his Roman Catholic upbringing and whose sexuality fell outside the norms of institutionalized morality. An episode within Cadmus’s broader vacillations between satire and idealization, this article argues for their interdependence. Reading the reception of the series by his own network, I analyze th…

“Just take your medicine and everything will be fine”
Young people who have grown up with perinatally acquired HIV in wealthy nations are increasingly transitioning into adult care settings which expect more independence and self-regulation than paediatric care. Drawing on the first qualitative study on growing up with HIV in Australia, this paper examines "responsibilisation" narratives in semi-structured interviews conducted with young people with HIV and their paediatric and adult care providers.…
Caring for ‘underground’ kids
Young people growing up with HIV are an emerging subpopulation in the global epidemic. Discursive representations of this population are largely dominated by the US-based research literature, which typically focuses on dysfunctions, sexual risks and negative public health outcomes. Against this background, our article examines clinical perspectives on key issues for young people with perinatally acquired HIV who are transitioning to adolescence a…

American Expansionism and Universal Allegory
ACHILLE LORIA's words of 18891 speak not only to the promise but also to the central paradox of the nineteenth-century myth that the United States was both the child and the parent of history: the redeemer nation could fulfill its historical mission only by transcending the very agencies that had given rise to it. Marking the beginning of a new dispensation, history's most recent republic, although conceived without sin, still bore the burden of …
