‘Even with the craziness, it worked’
Background As one pedagogical approach, an Activist Approach to teaching offers a structure for inquiry-oriented, learner-centered processes for context-specific educational endeavors (Oliver and Kirk [2015]. Girls, Gender, and Physical Education: An Activist Approach. New York: Routledge). With its four critical elements of student-centered pedagogy, attentiveness to issues of embodiment, inquiry-based learning centered in action, and listening …

Institutional quality, the level of development and Japanese outward foreign direct investment
FDI , financial constraint and partial ownership
This study uses matched firm‐bank‐FDI data from 1989 to 2016 to explore how a firm's financial constraints affect its foreign affiliate ownership structure choice. Importantly, it tests the hypothesis that parent firms with banks as their largest shareholders hold lower ownership shares in their foreign subsidiaries, in part due to typical bank risk‐averse behaviour. The empirical analysis confirms that foreign subsidiary ownership ratios are neg…
Cross-Cultural Insights from Two Global Mental Health Studies
This commentary highlights two cross-cultural issues identified from our global mental health (GMH) research, RECOLLECT (Recovery Colleges Characterisation and Testing) 2: self-enhancement and ingroup biases. Self-enhancement is a tendency to maintain and express unrealistically positive self-views. Ingroup biases are differences in one’s evaluation of others belonging to the same social group. These biases are discussed in the context of GMH res…

The impact of infrastructure investment on economic growth in the United Kingdom
Infrastructure investment has long been held as an accelerator or a driver of the economy. Internationally, the UK ranks poorly with the performance of infrastructure and ranks in the lower percentile for both infrastructure investment and GDP growth rate amongst comparative nations. Faced with the uncertainty of Brexit and the likely negative economic impact this will bring, infrastructure investment may be used to strengthen the UK economy. Thi…
Brexit and the location of Japanese direct investment in European regions
This paper investigates how the Brexit announcement affects Japanese direct investment into Europe at the regional NUTS-2 level. Political and economic uncertainty is an important factor affecting the economic performance of a country and its regions. In this study, Japanese annual firm-level data between the years 2000 and 2018 for 31 European countries is used. Negative binomial estimations indicate a significant negative relationship between u…

Teacher as Researcher, Teacher as Scholar, and Teacher as Leader
Too often, because of the static nature of schools and the dominant existence of high-stakes testing, professional learning for teachers is determined by administrators or policy and is facilitated by those who are not part of the school community using prepackaged programs. These initiatives run counter to authentic teacher inquiry where teachers enhance their understanding of students and learning and, ideally, develop new teaching practices (B…
Mercury Exposure in Ireland
The study demonstrates the benefit of human biomonitoring for assessing and comparing internal exposure levels, both on a population and an individual basis. It enables the potential harmful impact of mercury to be minimised in those highly exposed, and can therefore significantly contribute to population health
Decoding Al-Qaeda's Strategy
"By consulting the work of well-known and obscure al-Qaeda theoreticians, Michael W. S. Ryan finds jihadist terrorism strategy has more in common with the principles of Maoist guerrilla warfare than mainstream Islam. Encouraging strategists and researchers to devote greater attention to jihadi ideas rather than jihadist military operations, Ryan builds an effective framework for analyzing al-Qaeda's plans against America and constructs a compelli…

God in the Corridors of Power
God in the Corridors of Power: Christian Conservatives, the Media, and Politics in America is a comprehensive study of Christian conservative power in America's political culture—how it was achieved, how it is maintained, and where it is going. It came about in part because of an enduring influence in the school room, the seminary and in the pulpit, and in part because conservatives are so skilled at using commercial and non-commercial media, inc…

Propaganda and the subversion of objectivity
Osama bin Laden must be supremely confident about the continuing success of international terrorism, given events of the seven years following the 9/11 attacks. The West's response thus far has weakened the United States and its allies and generally strengthened terrorist organisations across the globe. We argue that the terrorist victory stems in part from media coverage of the George W. Bush administration's march to war. We argue that the medi…
God in the corridors of power
God in the Corridors of Power: Christian Conservatives, the Media, and Politics in America offers a multifaceted understanding of Christian conservative activists in politics today. Authors Michael Ryan and Les Switzer argue that the astonishing electoral successes of Christian conservatives at all levels of government was made possible, not only by a coalition of political interests, but also because of an emerging consensus on what constitutes …
The Puritans of Today”
This essay explores the polemical context in which Nathaniel Hawthorne wrote The Scarlet Letter. It pays particular attention to the Whig movement for moral reform in antebellum America, which sought to merge church and state. Democrats like Hawthorne took exception to this attempt to establish “moral government” in America. His novel argues for an ideal of personal freedom in moral matters and criticizes the Whig attempt to impose restrictive mo…

Framing the War Against Terrorism
Editorial writers for the US’ 10 largest newspapers created - during perhaps the most critical month in the war against terrorism - a singular symbolic narrative about possible military strikes in that ‘new kind of war’. The period of study is 12 September 2001, the day following the terrorist attacks, to 8 October, the day the bombing of Kabul began. It was during this critical period that the US decided to use military strikes as part of its re…

Health Centre Policy in England and Wales
During the planning period of the Health Service, few concepts aroused the expectations of both doctors and laymen more than that of health centres. The ever-growing specialization and interdependence of the various branches of medical knowledge had been emphasized for some years and it was widely considered that bringing together curative and preventive work under one roof would do much to improve the quality of first-line medical care. That hea…
Mainstream News Media, an Objective Approach, and the March to War in Iraq
Americans were forced to decide during an 18-month period of intense uncertainty whether to invade Iraq as part of the war against terrorism. This article reports compelling evidence that mainstream media between September 2001 and March 2003 failed in their primary responsibility: to provide sound news and commentary on which Americans could base critical decisions about war and peace. One reason is that journalists did not use an objective appr…

New French Theory in New German Critique
Rainer N~igele [The Provocation of Lacan in German Critique, No. 16 (Winter, 1979)] has launched a project which could lead to significant advances in the practice of critical theory. He attempts to combine critical theory with what he calls the New French Theory, more specifically, with the deconstructive philosophy of Jacques Derrida and with the structural psychoanalysis of Jacques Lacan. He gives indications of future plans to add the histori…

Media Attitudes and News Preferences
The urban violence which struck many American cities in the late 1960s stimulated academicians, professional journalists, politicians, and others to take a new and more concentrated look at predominantly black urban areas in an effort to determine the causes of the violence and what might be done to prevent its reoccurrence. Much of the attention was focused on the mass media and how well they communicated with the black residents of the riot-tor…

Henry Giroux's latest book, Theory and Resistance in Education, marks a significant moment in the development of a radical theory of education. Giroux advances comprehensive and convincing critiques of the existing structuralist and marxist reproductionist work in the area, while simultaneously combining the best of these theories with his own dialectical approach to produce an important new vector in the field of inquiry. Giroux works within a p…
