Examining the distribution of Middle Paleolithic Nubian cores relative to chert quality in southern (Nejd, Dhofar) and south‐central (Duqm, Al Wusta) Oman
Lithic raw material properties are often invoked to explain the presence, absence, form, or ontogeny of Paleolithic stone tools. Here, we explore whether the frequency of the Middle Paleolithic Nubian core form and core‐reduction systems co‐varies with toolstone quality in two neighboring regions in Oman: the southern region of Nejd, Dhofar, and the south‐central region of Duqm, Al Wusta. Specifically, we predicted that if raw material difference…

The Health Care Crisis in the United States
Michael Moore's film, Sicko, dramatically illustrated how problems in access to health care in the United States have escalated to the point of a crisis for all but the richest Americans. An experimental analysis of the contrast effect and its implications for intergroup communication and the indirect assessment of attitude
Experiments I and II were designed to differentiate between alternative interpretations of the contrast effect. Experiment I examines and rejects the hypothesis that the effect is specific to rating scales, since the effect also occurs when subjects are asked to make CDmparative judgments. Experiment II leads to the rejection of the hypothesis that the effect is purely semantic (i.e., specific to situations in which verbal labels are applied to a…

Aggression arousal, hostile humor, catharsis
This chapter examines the possible cathartic and tension-reducing function of hostile derisive humor centering around themes of revenge and destruction. It describes the effects of aggression arousal on the appreciation of hostile humor under two conditions: humor presented immediately following arousal, and humor presented after interposed administration of a mood checklist. When hostile humor, neutral humor, and a control recording were compare…
