Mutual interests management with a purposive approach
To enhance the academic endeavours confronting the globalisation of managerial orthodoxy (predicated on antagonising the interests of companies and employees), we will investigate the relationship between institutional performance and employees' (subjective) wellbeing in Turkish shipyards by undertaking an extensive survey. We will argue that there is a positive association between the two covariates that lends itself to a conceptual frame of Mut…
Managerial Jacobinism and performance in the private sector
Long‐lasting euphoria of the private sector managerialism has begun to be questioned even by its ardent advocators in recent years. Substantiating a distinct concern, this paper sheds light on what one might call ‘managerial Jacobinism’ through unstructured interviews conducted in Turkey's shipyards. As its most defining characteristics, the undervaluation of managerial work by the companies and the punitive treatment of good practices by the med…
Challenges and opportunities of globalisation for an independent small manufacturer
PurposeOver the past few decades, academic debates on small- and medium-sized establishments (SMEs) have focused on the challenges of globalisation, especially for the independent small producers outside the niche markets. However, the purpose of this paper is to highlight the limits of these sorts of evaluations arguing that globalisation can also provide opportunities for the valuable contributions of such enterprises.Design/methodology/approac…
Labour in a Global World

Talking Turkey for democracy
The rise of pro-Islamic politics, the eastward expansion of the EU and the invasion of Iraq have increased the Western media's interest in the only Muslim member of Nato: Turkey. Popular discussion, however, has overshadowed a lack of systematic analyses for a proper understanding of major political developments in Turkey. This paper aims to debate Turkey's state of affairs from the perspective of political economy. It will be argued that Turkey'…
Factory regimes and the dismantling of established labour in Asia
This article is about factory regimes and more particularly about changes in factory regimes in East Asia. Its point of departure is Burawoy’s early and highly influential contribution to the understanding of factory regimes (Burawoy, 1985), which has very often been associated with the idea of ‘hegemonic despotism’ and increased attempts by management at ideological control. The article seeks to go beyond this particular interpretation. Theoreti…
Neo-liberalism and labour within the context of an 'emerging market' economy- Turkey
It has been long argued by marketeers that neo-liberal reforms benefit the working class. This study suggests, however, that since the outset of the neo-liberal era in Turkey, temporary employment has risen, unionisation has declined, employment prospects have deteriorated and employees' earnings have diminished in real terms. Such developments made Turkey a 'better' place for capital. Yet they also caused a growing inequality in overall income d…
Job Security, Unionisation, Wages and Privatisation
In the recent years, many studies have dealt with the economic aspects of privatisation both in developing and developed countries. There is, however, a lack of systematic enquiries into employees' opinions about privatisation, albeit a number of claims have been advanced about the impact of privatisation upon the political attitudes of employees, and about its effects on employment relations. This article aims to contribute to filling this gap b…
