A measure of port-level resilience to shocks in commercial fisheries
Negg(at)ing the Game Studies Subject
This article traces a limited affective history of game studies in order to understand why marginalized scholars frequently feel unwelcome and uncomfortable in the field. Following the work of Clare Hemmings and Sara Ahmed, it digs into the inaugural issue of the journal Game Studies as well as the infamous narratology-versus-ludology debate to understand how the anxious and emotional rhetoric of the early game studies field imaginary created an …

Queerness in the Digital Age
The Velvet Light Trap gathered a diverse group of scholars with a range of specialties related to queer theory and media. This round-table touches on everything from dating apps to the films of John Waters to a livestreamed Indigo Girls concert, demonstrating the myriad ways digitality has affected queer media, representation, and audiences. The researchers began this discussion on 9 March 2020, only for closures due to the COVID-19 pandemic to b…

Gamer Trouble
Gamers have been in trouble as long as games have existed, constantly mired in controversies about violence, diversity, and online harassment. As our popular understanding of “gamer” shifts beyond its historical construction as a white, straight, adolescent, cisgender male, the troubles that emerge both confirm and challenge our understanding of identity politics. This book excavates the turbulent relationships between surface and depth in contem…
Survivance Confronts Collective Trauma with Community Response
Survivance Confronts Collective Trauma with Community Response Amanda Phillips (bio) Elizabeth LaPensée, Survivance, 2011, survivance.org/ (accessed January 16, 2018). Can a game help someone cope with trauma? It is a question that, perhaps surprisingly, has some history. The links between trauma and gaming go quite deep, from their repetitive cycles of dying and killing that motivate psychoanalytic modes of analysis1 to their real-world applicat…
Precarious Labor and the Digital Humanities
Precarious Labor and the Digital Humanities Christina Boyles (bio), Anne Cong-Huyen (bio), Carrie Johnston (bio), Jim McGrath (bio), and Amanda Phillips (bio) We want to believe that we can be agile and innovative, like Silicon Valley says it is, by making DH run with short-term grants, app contests, and temporary labor. We want to have a sort of Uber-style sharing economy for DH-research. But this is not how one supports careful, enduring schola…
Shooting to Kill
The headshot burst into the cultural imaginary with the assassination of John F. Kennedy in 1963, and it has been remediated from historical anxieties about execution and brain death to the eye-popping spectacle of the exploding head to video games, where it has entered a regime that holds virtuosic reflexes as the highest form of capital. By examining the textual and technological history of the headshot, this article develops a theory of mechro…
A Material Culture
This article traces changes in Ottoman voided and brocaded velvets ( çatma ) between the years of 1580 and 1740. It argues that demand for a distinctive type of cushion cover—which became an emblem of refined taste—substantially changed the nature of silk production in the weaving center of Bursa. Using estate inventories to trace the quantities and prices of çatma cushion covers, several trends emerge, the most significant being an increasing ra…
