  • Understanding grieving for a chatbot using two concepts from Wittgenstein

    Open Access•Samuel Williams•ARTICLE•Phenomenology and the Cognitive…•2025

In February 2023, changes to the AI chatbot Replika elicited a grieving response from a number of its users. This paper examines how some users of Replika expressed their sense of loss: in particular, those who write as if the chatbot was a subject in its own right. It is easy even for those who feel some sympathy for these users to dismiss the way in which they express themselves as inappropriate, on the grounds that the entity for which they ar…

  • A qualitative investigation into opportunity structures and disjuncture in the education-employment transition

Open Access•Chris Rolph, Samuel Williams et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Education & Work•2024

We present a small-scale qualitative study of the transition from full time education to employment, focusing on young people who are just approaching this phase of their lives. We explore their understanding of this milestone through a series of focus groups. We also interviewed significant professionals working with young people: school teachers, careers leaders, and local employers. From the responses we identify four common themes: hopes and …

BACKGROUND: Psilocybin is being studied for use in treatment-resistant depression. METHODS: In this phase 2 double-blind trial, we randomly assigned adults with treatment-resistant depression to receive a single dose of a proprietary, synthetic formulation of psilocybin at a dose of 25 mg, 10 mg, or 1 mg (control), along with psychological support. The primary end point was the change from baseline to week 3 in the total score on the Montgomery-Å…

  • Politics in the Piyasa

    Open Access•Samuel Williams•ARTICLE•Anthropology of the Middle East•2018

The emergence of gay identities in Istanbul is often regarded as a practical result of mobilisation by minority sexual rights NGOs. Indeed, Istanbul Pride emerged in the early 2000s as a widely-referenced exemplar of the political promise of street-level activism in Turkey. Tracing how gay initially was used in the nightlife market around İstiklal Street and reconstructing the early history of agitation for an annual Pride march, I argue that str…
