Industrial Ruins
Reviewed by Robert A. Jones Industrial Ruins: Space, Aesthetics, and Materiality. By Tim Edensor. Oxford: Berg, 2005. Pp. 208. £50/£16.99. Tim Edensor's new book is not the usual tour through the world of material-cultural studies and industrial archeology. Instead, it is about industrial space, how it is socially produced and commodified, and how it can be imbued with new meanings that recall original intentions while simultaneously allowing peo…
Science in National Cultures
Scientists in Britain believe that their work does not receive the recognition that it deserves from the national culture in comparison with continental Europe. Not an easy proposition to test, but possible through a comparison of how the achievements of science have been celebrated through representation on stamps. Postage stamps are official government products, and they are used to transmit and define the official view of the national culture.…

Heroes of the Nation? The Celebration of Scientists on the Postage Stamps of Great Britain, France and West Germany
Despite their easy availability, postage stamps have received little attention as historical source material. One of the aims of this article is to demonstrate the utility of postage stamps for the study of the construction of national attitudes and cultures — in this instance, national attitudes to science and scientists. It has frequently been suggested that science has not been afforded the same level of respect in Britain that is usual in man…

The scientist as artist
The Man in the White Suit is perhaps the major representation of a scientist in mainstream British films of the postwar period. The film was immensely popular at the time of its release in 1951 and continues to be influential today. This paper, which is part of an ongoing study of the image of scientists presented by the cinema during this period, analyzes The Man in the White Suit by comparing it with another film of the period, The Horse's Mout…
The Boffin
The period between 1945 and 1970 was critical for the public reputation of British science. It was also a golden age for British cinema. Feature films of this period are used in this paper as a tool for investigating the public image of the scientist. Three main stereotypes are identified, but one of these, which I have called `the Boffin' forms the main focus of the paper. `Boffins' are scientists working with the government and/or armed forces …
Effect of variation in perceived risk on the secretion of β‐endorphin
It is currently unknown why individuals opt to participate in risk taking as a form of recreation. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that β‐endorphin, a naturally produced opiatelike peptide, is secreted in response to a perception of risk, thereby reinforcing risk‐taking behaviors. A 2 × 2 factorial design (Time × Perceived Risk) with repeated measures across both factors was used. The two levels of time were pre‐and postexposure to…

The Treasury-Bill Futures Market
A model of the Treasury-bill futures market of the risk-premium augmented expectations variety is developed and estimated for the period March 1976 to July 1978. For that period we conclude that (1) futures interest rates deviate significantly from the corresponding forward rates implicit in the spot-market yield curve; (2) the hypothesis that expectations about the level of and trend in interest rates are formed adaptively from past spot rates f…

The Nazi Thingspiel
depths, choruses of Young-Germany soldiers call from afar. Because the unemployed worker confirms lamentations about a country which has become economically crippled and taken over by foreign powers, fallen one, unknown soldier rises up-as voice of warning-to suffer his passion and to save his people. The evil spirit, a mixture of war profiteers, revolutionaries, traitors and capitalists, mobilizes a campaign for total consumption and, to applaus…
The Origin and Development of Media of Exchange
The paper develops an explanation for the emergence of media of exchange through the unconcerted market behavior of individuals. Individuals are assumed to accomplish their ultimate exchanges through trading sequences which minimize the expected time spent searching for complementary trading partners. If individual perceptions of the trading environment are appropriately restricted, then the equilibrium pattern of trade will be some mixture of di…

There are, of course, several volumes and articles on Sumner, Ward and their followers, although much remains to be done here as well. But an assessment of the impact of Darwin on American sociology awaits at least two additional resources: 1) studies of the dominant schools of social thought before Darwin's appearance; and 2) studies of the careers of anti-Darwi…
