Undisciplining the university through shared purpose, practice, and place
Interdisciplinary scholarship and education remains elusive at modern universities, despite efforts at both the individual and institutional levels. The objective of this paper is to identify the main motivations that bring different disciplines together in joint research and identify some of the obstacles to that coming together. Here we propose that shared purpose (why do I participate?), practice (how do we interact?), and place (where do we i…

Artful History
Lewis Mumford’s Urbanism and the Problem of Environmental Modernity
This essay reconsiders the early career of Lewis Mumford and the assumption that modernity has been disastrous environmentally. Might it be possible to see Mumford, especially in his writings of the 1930s, as an early exemplar of green urbanism? Within environmental history, Mumford has been treated mostly as a regionalist—sometimes even as an opponent of the city. This essay argues that in fact his path toward ecological “balance” led directly t…

Arcadian America
Letters to a tenured historian
After the most recent round of earthquakes, mudslides, and fires, when Southern California was finally abandoned, many of the collections of the Huntington Library were brought to the ever-expanding Capital Archive here in Winnipeg. A friend in the Manuscripts Division called our attention to a particular file labeled 'Historiography: Correspondence' – donated anonymously but compiled, we think, by a professional historian of an earlier time (tex…
American Arcadia
Environmental thought in nineteenth-century America has often been dismissed: either it was strictly utilitarian, or it was oriented exclusively toward wilderness, or it was a naïve, nostalgic form of pastoralism. But some evidence supports the flowering of a landscape tradition in the antebellum period that was characterized by a simultaneous engagement with mortality and with the immediate environmental context of ordinary life, by an ecologica…

Civil Rights in the Field
This article argues that Carey McWilliams's primary emphasis in Factories in the Field was not on the scale of California agriculture, but on the basic civil rights of farm workers, especially free speech, free assembly, and collective bargaining. Only these civil liberties, McWilliams felt, could help equalize social relations and also improve environmental conditions in California agriculture. Furthermore, by interpreting the 1930s agitation on…
"The Ultimate "Other
This article is a meditation on the overlaps between environmentalism, post-colonial theory, and the practice of history. It takes as a case study the writings of the explorer-scientist-abolitionist Alexander von Humboldt (1769-1859), the founder of a humane, socially conscious ecology. The post-colonial critique has provided a necessary corrective to the global environmental movement, by focusing it on enduring colonialist power dynamics, but at…

Kepler's View of the Star of Bethlehem and the Babylonian Almanac for 7/6 B.C.
Modern discussion of what identifiable astronomical phenomenon lies behind the biblical story of the so-called Star of Bethlehem was effectively begun by the astronomer Johann(es) Kep(p)ler (1571–1630), mathematician to Rudolph II, Holy Roman Emperor 1576–1612. In the years 1604–5 a supernova appeared in the constellation Ophiuchus and excited considerable discussion in Europe. Kepler kept a detailed record of his observations of the star. In the…
A Babylonian King List of the Hellenistic Period
A number of cuneiform tablets containing chronological lists of kings of Babylonia and Assyria from various periods have been published during the last seventy-five years. None, however, of these King Lists deals with the Seleucid period, which is now covered for the first time. The present edition of the King List is intended to be a preliminary one. Once it is subjected to the detailed criticism of the Greek historians and after the one minor ph…
The Late Assyrian Royal-Seal Type
This year is a particularly appropriate one in which to revive the subject of the Royal Assyrian Seal, for it is exactly a century since the publication of Austen H. Layard's Discoveries in the Ruins of Nineveh and Babylon, in which —among so many other things that remain vivid and delightfully instructive —the royal character of the type of stamp seal under discussion was first suggested. The most recently discovered example of an impression of …
