Performance Standards, Student Effort on Homework, and Academic Achievement
Recent reports on the state of American schools have focused on the standards for student performance. Using a sample of 12,146 students from 20 public high schools, we estimate the effects of teachers', parents', and peers' standards on student effort and achievement while controlling for the effects of student background factors. Teachers', parents', and peers' standards each have a positive and significant effect on the time students spend on …

The report by Coleman, Hoffer and Kilgore on public and private schools is criticizedfor failing to consider alternative explanations of school effectiveness and for drawing narrow policy implications. Data from 612 students in 8ix midwestern high 8chools are analyzed to assess the relative effects of socio-economic background and peer influences on their college plans. The analysis reveals that by the end of the senior year of high school, status in the social system of the 8chool contributes more to variation in college plans than does parents' education. These findings ohallenge the results of several studies which show that the most importa…
