Open Access•David Aadland, Bistra Anatchkova et al.•ARTICLE•Social Science Quarterly•2012•Referencias: 16

Objectives We report on a nation‐wide study conducted for federal land‐management agencies. Congress mandated a new annual pass for recreational access to U . S . public lands. Methods To assist policymakers in setting a price for the new pass, we administered a national telephone survey with more than 2,000 respondents. Using “contingent valuation” methods, we model willingness to pay for the pass at different prices. Our research design lets us…

  • The organizational formation of atmospheric science

    Open Access•Patricia A Taylor•ARTICLE•The Social Science Journal•2005•Referencias: 3

In this paper, the history of atmospheric science is traced, from the earliest discussions from meteorologists, and the first meetings to describe this new research area. The development of atmospheric science proceeded in three phases with each phase being marked by the attempt to organize resources, and bring into the atmospheric science network, scientists from other fields. I argue here that this construction of a science provides evidence of…

  • Measuring Women's Sport Interest in Response to Title IX

Open Access•Martin M Greller, Robert Cochran et al.•ARTICLE•Educational and Psychological…•1995

An approach is described whereby universities may respond to Title IX inquiries from the Office of Civil Rights regarding women's sport equity. This responds to that portion of the law that requires that institutions meet women's sport interest in equal measure to men's. The survey provides results useful for institutional decision making and helps address the specific needs and interests of the student body

  • The Celebration of Heroes Under Communism

    Patricia A Taylor•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1987•Citada por: 5•Referencias: 3

Drawing on the work of Goode, Mills, and others, a theoretical synthesis of the place of formal honors in systems of inequality is presented. A multivariate analysis shows that the effects of ascribed characteristics on the receipt of awards operate indirectly, while employment position and professional achievement have different effects for different types of awards. And for the first time for a Communist society, we demonstrate in the analysis …

  • Work Satisfaction Under Yugoslav Self-Management

    Patricia A Taylor, Burke D Grandjean et al.•ARTICLE•Social Forces•1987•Citada por: 1

After reviewing the history and current practice of self-management in Yugoslavia, we examine net effects on work satisfaction from being a self-management delegate, a manager or supervisor, or the owner of a private business, along with other variables. Data are from a 1983 probability sample in the most industrialized of Yugoslavia's six republics. Consistent with U.S. studies, older, more educated, female workers, those in the majority ethnic …

  • Job Satisfaction among Female Clerical Workers

    Open Access•Burke D Grandjean, Patricia A Taylor•ARTICLE•Sociology of Work and Occupations•1980

The most influential theoretical explanation for the job dissatisfaction of clerical workers has been that of Mills, who attributed their dissatisfaction to the declining prestige of clerical work and the unreliability of traditional bases for status claims by individual clerical workers. Kanter's alternative perspective directs attention instead to restricted opportunities for advancement and accomplishment. Specific predictions developed from t…

An analysis of income inequality by race and sex within the federal civil service yields three findings of importance for income attainment and human capital research. First, large differences in salary between minority/sex groups remain after occupational stream and a number of employment-related variables are controlled. Second, institutionalized discrimination explains only one-half of these salary differences. Finally, within the federal civi…

    Patricia A Taylor, Norval D Glenn•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1976•Citada por: 42•Referencias: 6

A study of a U.S. national sample of females ages 25 through 40 reveals a moderate association of education, and a weaker association of physical attractiveness, with husbands' occupational prestige. Consistent with earlier findings reported by Elder, the contribution of education to females' status attainment through marriage seems to vary positively with level of origins and the contribution of attractiveness seems to vary inversely, except tha…
