Of the medieval Muslim historians writing in Arabic and Persian several supply us with lists of the viziers employed by Ṭughrul Beg, the first sultan of the Āl Seljuq. The list supplied by Ibn al-Athir (died A.D. 1234) shows the following four persons as having acted in turn for him as vizier: (1) Abū'l-Qāsim ‘All ibn ‘Abd Allah al-Juwaynī. • The sar-gudhasht-i sayyidnā , the “Tale of the Three Schoolfellows” and the wasaya of the Niẓām al-Mulk

    Open Access•Harold Bowen•ARTICLE•Journal of the Royal Asiatic…•1931

The original version of the Assassin biography of al-Ḥasan ibn al-Ṣabbāḥ, called sar-gudhasht-i sayyidnā , is not extant. All we possess are two recensions of it, if such a term is apposite, in the notes taken on the work by the two seventh/thirteenth century historians, ‘Aṭā-Malik al-Juwaynī (work completed 658/1260) and the Rashīd al-Dīn Faḍdl Allāh (work completed 710/1310–11). For unless we may suppose that al-Juwaynī, who discovered the book…

  • Umar Khayyam And A Relative Of The Nizam Al-Mulk

    Open Access•Harold Bowen•ARTICLE•Bulletin of the School of…•1930

The early account of 'Umar Khayyām published in Vol. V, Part III of the Bulletin contains a reference to his visiting a certain vizier, namely the Shihāb al-Islām " 'Abd al-Razzăq, son of the great jurisconsult Abu'l-Qāsim 'Abdallāh ibn 'Alī". In the text as printed these names are followed by the words (trans., ibn Akh Naẓẓzām). But we should undoubtedly read instead either or " nephew of the Niẓām [al-Mulk] ", since from other sources we know e…

The introduction to the edition of the fárs-námeh of “Ibn al-Balkhí” by Mr. Le Strange and Professor Nicholson contains a long passage dealing with the end of the Buwayhid or Búyid dynasty. This passage, and particularly its footnotes, show that there are points in this section of history that it would be interesting to clear up. I have attempted to clear them up in what follows. For the purpose I have used a number of Arabic and Persian works, i…
