Movements to Combat Sex-Trafficking: The Social Construction of a Global Problem and Its Solutions
In this paper we analyze the international movements against sex-trafficking, identifiable for 150 years. We critically assess actor-centric approaches within IR that assume a tight connection between intentional actors and a singular norm. We build on critical research to develop a cultural institutional approach that focuses on the intertwining of actors and institutions and on how outcomes are loosely coupled from actors’ actions. Several empi…
Public Policies, Stakeholder Interest, and Nonprofit Development: The Case of Trade Associations in Shanghai, China
This study examines the reform and development of trade associations in Shanghai, China, one of the main economic hubs of the country and marked by a substantial growth in trade associations since the reform and “opening-up” in 1978. We analyze public policies pertaining to trade associations, survey data collected from 212 local trade associations in Shanghai, and interviews of government officials and trade association leaders. The research res…
World Polity, World Culture, World Society
Expressing reservations about conceptualizing a world society, the question is posed: Can we use sociological theory and in particular a concept of society and still avoid “conceptualizing the question of globalization as one of homogeneity, cohesion, a whole,” or should we instead find ways to focus on “multiple and changing connections?” Framing the issues this way unfortunately nearly guarantees that our conversation will remain rooted in the …
The cultural and religious character of world society
Globalization within world culture presents opportunities and challenges for religions. Religious beliefs and practices in world society take the form of explicit collective action that engages global rationalism. The cultural and religious character of the world is important in understanding the place of religion and religious movements within it. This chapter develops a conceptual framework for understanding the cultural nature of globalization…

Constructing World Culture: International Nongovernmental Organizations Since 1875
This book illuminates the central role played by international nongovernmental organizations (INGOs) in the emergence and development of a comprehensive world polity. The contributors argue that the enormous proliferation of INGOs since 1875—including international environmental organizations, human rights groups, bodies formed to regulate technical standards, and economic development organizations, among others—both reflects and contributes to t…

World Culture in the World Polity: A Century of International Non-Governmental Organization
The authors analyze the growth of international non-governmental organizations between 1875 and 1973 using a data set on almost 6,000 organizations. Although these organizations are highly interconnected with the expanding state system and world economy, as reflections of and contributors to world culture they have helped construct a world polity that cannot be reduced to networks of economic and political interaction. Their analysis of the struc…
World Society and the Nation-State
The authors analyze the nation‐state as a worldwide institution constructed by worldwide cultural and associational processes, developing four main topics: (1) properties of nation‐states that result from their exogenously driven construction, including isomorphism, decoupling, and expansive structuration; (2) processes by which rationalistic world culture affects national states; (3) characteristics of world society that enhance the impact of wo…
Cultural Analysis of Religious Change and Movements
In this article I review a cultural perspective on religion and suggest that cultural analysis resolves current debates over the nature of religion as either collectivist or individualist. I use one type of cultural analysis, institutionalism, to present an interpretive overview of religious change and movements in historical contexts of global instrumental rationality, in particular the expansion of state authority. The usefulness of this approa…

Legitimation, Endorsement, and Stability
Intuition and formal theories of legitimacy suggest that endorsement of a social order should have important effects on compliance to and the stability of that order. Evidence from experimental and nonexperimental research fails to offer consistent support for that argument. This article contends that investigators have generally failed to recognize acts as objects of legitimation and entirely neglect variation in the sources of legitimacy. As a …

The Expansion of the State
The term intersectionality references the critical insight that race, class, gender, sexuality, ethnicity, nation, ability, and age operate not as unitary, mutually exclusive entities, but rather as reciprocally constructing phenomena. Despite this ...Read More
