Toward a Theory of Role Accumulation
The assumption that multiplicity of roles produces a strong tendency toward as a consequence of conflict or overload is disputed. The benefits of accumulation tend to outweigh any stress to which it might give rise, thereby yielding net gratification. A historical antagonism between the proponents of qualitative fieldwork and of survey research has prevented recognition of the benefits to be gained by employing both methods in the same study. Comparisons of parental preferences among four teaching styles with the self-images of their children's teachers reveal that while mothers prefer a content-oriented style over any other, a majority of teachers see themselves as discovery-oriented.
