  • Ethgender, Women's Waged Labor, and Economic Mobility

    James A Geschwender•ARTICLE•Social Problems•1992•Cited by: 13•References: 8

This article illustrates the theoretical utility of a modified version of the concept “ethgender.” Ethgender is defined as that portion of identity which embodies both gender and ethnicity and which is formed as a totality as a result of a single set of sociohistorical processes. The focus is on a single aspect of ethgender—that which defines the appropriateness of married women, with husbands present, engaging in waged labor. After examining the…

  • Ethnicity and the Social Construction of Gender in the Chinese Diaspora

    Open Access•James A Geschwender•ARTICLE•Gender & Society•1992•Cited by: 1•References: 20

This article analyzes the relationship between married women's waged labor and their position in the racial stratification order, comparing Chinese-Canadians in British Columbia and Chinese-Americans in California and Hawaii. It utilizes a theoretical perspective that sees gender as differentially constructed within ethnic groups and as reflecting the interaction of group heritage, historical experiences, and location in the stratification order.…

  • The Truly Disadvantaged: Structuring an Agenda for Change

    James A Geschwender•ARTICLE•The Journal of Sociology & Social…•1989

This manuscript addresses the question as to how we may best structure an agenda for change aimed at improving the economic situation for the "truly disadvantaged." I have chosen to address this question within the limits set by existing political circumstances. Policy proposals are presented because they are believed to be achievable and would be effective if implemented. It is impossible to think about this question without considering the prop…

  • The Portuguese and Haoles of Hawaii: Implications for the Origin of Ethnicity

    James A Geschwender, Rita Carroll-Seguin et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1988•Cited by: 21•References: 6

Ethnicity in Hawaii is approached as a social construct created during expansion of the capitalist world-system. Haole typically refers to persons of European extraction, while Local normally refers to those of non-European origin. Portuguese-Americans are of European origin but are considered Locals. We argue that this anomaly was brought about by the different origins of two groups in the world-system. The first Europeans came to Hawaii from th…

The assessment of future trends in the development of social movements lacks precision, but it is an important task which should be attempted with maximum care. Much current discussion focuses on the relevance of Marxist-Leninist principles to the black movement in America (Baraka, 1974; Hare, 1975; Cruse, 1967). This paper will attempt to evaluate the future prospects for black Marxist-Leninist organizations by examining lessons which may be lea…

  • Social Reference Basis of Job Satisfaction: The Case of Manual Workers

    William H Form, James A Geschwender•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1962•Cited by: 11•References: 1

Studies in job satisfaction typically assume that the individualistic value orientations of middle status groups pervade all levels of the occupational structure. This study postulated that such orientations do not characterize different types of industrial workers, and that reference group theory can account for the traditional findings, as well as such anomalous findings as high satisfaction among relatively unskilled workers. However, referenc…

Status inconsistents are found to exhibit these symptoms. An examination of particular status consistency profiles reveals a significant variation in propensity between types of inconsistents. It is suggested that future analysis in this area should focus pr…

The sociological literature is examined and five structural hypotheses are derived. Data on the changing position of the nonwhite in the United States are examined. Nonwhites are found to be improving their position in terms of level of education. type of occupation, and amount of income. They are found to b…

It integrates the Theory of Social Certitude, the Principle of Expectancy Congruence, and the Theory of Distributive Justice into the Theory of Cognitive Dissonance. The combined theory is evaluated in terms of its utility in explaining the empirical consequences of status inconsistency. A series of predictions are ma…
