Toward Theoretical Liberation: Challenging the Intellectual Imperialism of the Western Race Paradigm
We hope to encourage the development of decentered, decolonized, ground-breaking theory about ethnic and racial exploitation in the 21st century world-system. To accomplish that, we contend that academics and activists need to liberate themselves from the historical and ideological confines of the western race paradigm. Consequently, we have shaped this essay around that goal. In Section 2, we explore the dangers of universalizing the western rac…

Moving toward Theory for the 21st Century: The Centrality of Nonwestern Semiperipheries to World Ethnic/Racial Inequality
While there has been much attention to the economic, political, and transformative potential of the semiperiphery, scholars have failed to explore the ways in which this zone of the world-system causes, contributes to, and exacerbates world ethnic/racial inequality. By 2015, a majority of the world’s population is concentrated in 41 nonwestern semiperipheries that generate 40 percent of the world Gross Domestic Product. For those reasons, this es…
Challenging the Global Apartheid Model: A World-Systems Analysis
Using world-system concepst, this essay challenges the popular racial bifurcation of the world between whites and peoples of color
The Core of the Apple: Degrees of Monopoly and Dark Value in Global Commodity Chains
The capitalist world-economy takes the form of an iceberg. The most studied part which appears above the surface is supported by a huge underlying structure that is out of sight. Unlike the iceberg, the world-economy is a dynamic system based on flows of value from the underside toward the top. These include drains of surplus (expropriated value) that take two forms: visible monetarized flows of bright value and hidden un(der)costed flows that ca…

Textile Workers and Union Sentiment
Although southern textile workers typically are portrayed as anti-union and extremely deferential, there is little empirical evidence to support such an assertion. We present data from 208 textile workers in a southern textile community without any unionized mills. We find that paternalistic class relations are still a factor in worker attitudes but that workers also express higher levels of activism and union support than expected. The continued…

The New Myth of Class and Crime
On the basis of a reanalysis of the empirical evidence. Tittle et al. (1978) concluded that the presumed inverse relationship between class and crime is a myth. We discuss six problems in their evaluation: paucity of evidence; lack of specification of theoretical relationships; faulty specification and measures of class; inadequate operational definitions of “crime”; faulty analysis of evidence; and failure to examine all evidence. We conclude th…
A Neo-Marxian Critique, Formulation and Test of Juvenile Dispositions as a Function of Social Class
First, this research challenges the methodological adequacy of previous juvenile disposition studies, particularly their conceptualization and measure of social class. Second, a neo-Marxian theory of juvenile court dispositions is presented. This theory distinguishes between two offense patterns (traditional crimes against person and property and crimes against the moral order, status and victimless offenses) in terms of their relative impact on …
The Kanawha County Textbook Controversy: A Study of the Politics of Life Style Concern
Kanawha County, West Virginia is the scene of a continuing protest over the content of textbooks used in the public schools. This protest is analyzed within a reformulated theoretical framework of status politics derived from Weber and Gusfield. The background and development of this moral crusade are examined, as well as its organization, leadership, and the basic issues of the conflict. The conflict is viewed as a struggle between status groups…
The Civil Religious Dimension: Is It There
This study seeks the empirically elusive dimension of civil religion which has been suggested by Bellah and others. It is done against the backdrop of previously established orientations to church religion. Items designed for both civil and church religious dimensions are factor analyzed and obliquely rotated. In contrast to previously unsuccessful efforts with less direct techniques, civil religion clearly emerges as a distinct factor, separate …
Conversion in a Billy Graham Crusade: Spontaneous Event or Ritual Performance
Literature on religious conversion contains turnabout and ritualistic explanations. This paper examines the nature of the contemporary religious revival or crusade and finds evidence that revival conversions are ritualistic, integrative events. Crusaders are over-whelmingly church members and frequent church attenders. The Graham organization carefully structures the conversion process through local community organization, counselors, screening q…
In the Company of the Converted: Characteristics of a Billy Graham Crusade Audience
This article is an examination of the social characteristics of a Billy Graham Crusade audience in Knoxville, Tennessee. Basic data sources are (1) a short questionnaire administered to persons in randomly selected seats, (2) a larger follow-up mail questionnaire, and (3) a comparison survey of area residents. Crusade attenders are more educated and of higher income and occupational prestige than area residents. They attend church more frequently…

Professionalization and Stratification Patterns in an Industrial Community
In this paper, data collected in a community in which the major employer is a highly automated chemical-processing firm are compared with data from studies dealing with earlier stages in the process of inustrialization. These data suggest that the effects of contemporary technological changes upon the occupational structure and, consequently, upon, class, status, and power arrangements may be quite dirrerent from the effects of technological chan…
Economic Dominants and Community Power a Comparative Analysis
A comparison of the community power positions of economic dominants in a satellite city and an independent city over a century shows both similarities and differences. In both communities they withdrew from elective political offices as business became integrated into national markets. Partial withdrawal from offices in civic associations occurred later. Economic dominants in the independent city were more often cited as public leaders or top inf…
