A social ecological, relationship-based strategy for parent involvement
Purpose – Most schools struggle to get busy and stressed parents to come repeatedly to the school building for events. At primary schools, especially those with pupils living in low-income communities or with many immigrants, involving parents to come at all is seen as a challenge. The purpose of this paper is to present a social ecological strategy of using the school building as a site for families to gather and for community networks to grow b…
Engaging Young Parents and Their Families in a Multi-family Group Work Intervention
This article offers a practice account of the pilot of an inclusive, community based, multi-family group intervention for young mothers and fathers, their children and extended family. Adapting this North American social work intervention, which is delivered by service user staff members, social work and health professionals, in a UK city demonstrated that young parents and their extended families could be engaged onto a programme designed to enh…

Examining Evictions through a Life-Course Lens
Evictions, as markers of housing instability, call attention to the “housing affordability crisis.” The purpose of this research was to examine the individual and structural circumstances that contributed to eviction transitions in housing careers across the life course, how housing trajectories spiralled into homelessness, and how the confluence of social policies operated during these transitions. Qualitative interviews indicated that transitio…
Theorising about ageing, family and immigration
This article critically reviews the ways in which theories in social gerontology have been used to explain the influence of ethnicity and immigration on older adults. The purpose of this cursory examination is to explore how these theories can be used for further theory advancement without serious modifications to existing theories. Current theories do not have the capacity to capture the effects of immigration at the structural level and its lin…
Florence Nightingale a Hundred Years on
This article reviews Florence Nightingale's work 100 years after her death, based on surviving writing compiled for The Collected Works of Florence Nightingale. Described are her founding of a new profession for women, based on patient care, her pioneering work in statistics and data analysis and her bold reform of the workhouse infirmaries. A section on historiography focuses on the negative impact of F. B. Smith's attack on Nightingale in 1982 …
An evaluation of a groupwork intervention for teenage mothers and their families
This paper describes the implementation of a specific, community‐based, multi‐family group (MFG) intervention strategy (Families and Schools Together [FAST] babies) aimed at improving the outcomes for infants of teenage mothers in 11 Canadian communities. The aims of this social work group intervention were (1) to engage the teenage mothers into a socially inclusive experience that might challenge the social disapproval they often experience, (2)…
The Life of Trafficked Sex Workers From the Former Eastern Bloc
Although Canada has become a preferred destination for human smuggling and trafficking, human trafficking represents a topic that is long on media discussion and short on rigorous academic research. Consequently, little is known about women trafficked to Canada. We carried out interviews with 50 persons, including 20 female sex workers, 15 agency personnel, and 15 key informants to better understand the working lives of Eastern/Central European w…
Women Theorists on Society and Politics
Revolution, abolition of slavery, public health care, welfare, violence against women, war and militarism — such issues have been debated for centuries. But much work done by women theorists on these traditional social and political topics is little known or difficult to obtain. This new anthology contains significant excerpts not normally included in standard collections. Women Theorists on Society and Politics brings together scarce, previously…

Poor health and retirement income
Using the 1994 Canadian General Social Survey, this study examines the economic effects of retiring because of poor health. When men and women who have retired for reasons of poor health are compared to those who have retired for other reasons, the health retirees are disadvantaged on measures of their health, on human capital variables, in terms of their work history, and ultimately, in their retirement income whether personal or household. The …

The Early Origins of the Social Sciences
Arguing that the beginnings of the social sciences extend much further back than is generally realized, Lynn McDonald traces the methodological foundations, research techniques, and basic concepts of the social sciences from their earliest origins to the beginning of this century. This thorough investigation enables her to provide empirical refutation of recent radical, feminist, and environmentalist critiques that assert that the social sciences…

Theory and Evidence of Rising Crime in the Nineteenth Century
The question as to whether crime rates are rising or falling has both important public policy implications, in the law and order debate, and academic, in tests of etiological theories. This paper contends that official crime rates were falling in the two major industrial countries of the nineteenth century, Britain and France. Yet the major sociologists, lawyers, judges and so forth continued to discuss 'rising crime', and to develop theories to …
