Gender and the 2018 U.S. Congressional Election
Nationally in the U.S. women started to identify more than men with the Democratic Party than the Republican Party in the 1960s and began to vote consistently more often than men for a Democratic rather than Republican presidential candidate beginning in 1980. The suspected causes of this political gender gap have tended to vary with shifting social and political contexts. One relative constant has been women’s greater preference for candidates w…

Military Tradition, the Human Costs of War and the 2008 Election
Opposition to the Iraq War is thought to have contributed to the election of Barack Obama in 2008. The present study shows that controlling for other factors, including the percentage of the vote going to the prewar Democratic presidential candidate, states with relatively high levels of Iraq War military fatalities had a higher percentage vote for Obama. This result is consistent with a prediction derived from rational political theory and the r…
Religion, Rational Political Theory, and the 2008 Presidential Election
States of the United States differ significantly in terms of politically salient religious culture. But prior to the 2008 presidential election several studies inspired by rational political theory that found that during war time voting districts with high rates of military fatalities were more likely to vote against incumbent candidates and for anti-war candidates failed to control for variation in religious culture. In the present study, multiv…
A Comparative Framework for the Analysis of International Student Movements
Recent theory and research on revolution indicate that leadership and ideology play crucial roles. Much of the leadership and ideology for contemporary revolutions developed within the context of student movements. But previous research on student movements has often been limited to developed Western societies and has yielded typologies of student activism that have little application to revolutionary movements worldwide. Based on an analysis of …
Violent Cultural Factors and Serial Homicide by Males
Explaining the phenomenon of male serial homicide has usually been approached from a psychiatric perspective. However, recent integrative theory suggests that cultural factors may play a role in shaping the psychology of young males with particular psychiatric and possibly neurological vulnerabilities in such ways as to facilitate converting the motivation to kill into actual behavior. Present results indicated that 34-45% of the interstate varia…
The Truly Disadvantaged, Public Assistance, and Crime
This study examines the conditioning effect of welfare benefits on the relationship between resource deprivation and metropolitan crime rates. We analyzed aggregate data for a sample of large metropolitan counties in 1990 (N = 406). Our welfare measure combined the cost-of-living-adjusted public assistance payment per poor person and the public assistance participation rate among the poor. Our measure of resource deprivation included three highly…
AFDC, a City's Racial and Ethnic Composition, and Burglary
This study explores whether and how AFDC and a city's racial and ethnic composition are related to burglary. Analyses were conducted for 140 cities for which data on burglary, AFDC, cost of living, racial and ethnic makeup, unemployment, and other relevant social and economic variables were available. Cost-of-living-adjusted AFDC payment per recipient was found to have a negative effect on burglary. This relationship held when racial and ethnic c…
How Gender Determines the Causes of Smoking: A Preliminary Report
Analyses of a national sample of 849 adults indicated that gender conditioned the effects of several variables on tobacco smoking. Interaction tests indicated that religiosity deterred only women's smoking, while satisfaction with financial status inhibited only men's smoking. The experience of physical violence during childhood promoted smoking only among men
Economic Frustration and Sexual Assault in Large American Cities
Frustration-Aggression Theory suggests that alleviating economically generated frustration can reduce violent crime. The present multivariate analysis suggested differences in the amount of welfare assistance to the poor had a relatively strong negative relationship to the variation in reported rates of sexual assault among 142 large American cities

Testing the economic theory of fertility with cross‐sectional and change data
Previous tests of the economic theory of fertility using multivariate regression techniques have generally analyzed only cross‐sectional data. Some students of fertility, notably Janowitz (1973a,b), have argued that such studies must also be conducted with change data. This paper presents tests of the economic theory of fertility with both cross‐sectional and change data for the 48 contiguous states. The cross‐sectional analyses examined the effe…

Embourgeoisement in Indianapolis
The embourgeoisement thesis was examined in Indianapolis for blue-collar workers in general and skilled blue-collar workers in particular with regard to a wide range of political, social and economic variables. The findings did not support the embourgeoisement thesis and marked blue-collar–white-collar differences were found, especially with regard to economic attitudes and domestic political attitudes and behavior. An analysis of covariance reve…
