Word Scales for Degrees of Opinion
This paper describes experiments relating to the choice of words and phrases for use in questionnaires and public opinion polls. It is concerned particularly with expressions of degree or intensity of belief or opinion, and of temporal frequency. Sets of phrases were presented to groups of subjects in random order, in serial order, and in context and the subjects were asked to place each item on a nine-point scale. From the results, the mean scal…

The Counteractance Model
The proposed model operationally defines "counteractance" in three tenses by formulas specifying: how to identify it in fitting harmonic curves (i.e.,=k/x); how to produce it from preconditions of two measurable and opposed interactions where everyone has equal opportunity to interact; and how to predict in such situations. In four controlled experiments in series of towns an interaction in the form of the diffusion of a message was found with ex…

ranged as replicas of commonplace social situations conducive to cultural production. Since cultural phenomena were actually brought about in the experiments and not merely simulated, the miniature histories appear to be operational replicas. The matter of these particular replicas working outside of the laboratory has not been established. But the experiments do raise questions as to the actual workings of culture in history. Our most disturbing…

Testing Message Diffusion in Controlled Experiments
E XPERIMENTATION in Project Revere centers around, although it is not limited to, the testing of a highly general hypothesis of human interacting to be described below. It analyzes all human interacting or group phenomena into nine classes of observable factors which are expected to describe it well enough for predicting it. This experimentation is part of a contract with the Air Force to study the diffusion of messages in enemy, neutral, or frie…

The Interactance Hypothesis
T HE HYPOTHESIS of interactance predicts the number of interactions, of any one specific kind, among people when observed in groups, from their basic dimensions of time, space, population and per capita This dimensional principle of human interacting can be roughly stated in folk terms (to be more exactly defined below) as: Groups of people interact more as they become faster, nearer, larger, and leveled up in activity. Conversely, people will in…
A Mass-Time Triangle
When all sorts of material entities from atoms to people and from bacilli to stars are plotted on a scale of time and a scale of mass some very interesting alignments and symmetries emerge. It is observed that the data of the physical, biological, psychological, and social sciences form a neat isosceles triangle as shown in Figure 1 below. The facts are simple as graphed in Figure 1 on logarithmic scales; their explanation or interpretation is no…
