  • Best practices: What perspective, what evidence

    John H Mueller•ARTICLE•Journal of Social Distress and…•2006

We have endured thirty years of progressively more convoluted research ethics reviews, in the absence of any ongoing assessment that any new regulation has been effective. To assess effectiveness, of course, we would need a baseline, but there never was a demonstrated need for the regulations in the first place. Further, to assess effectiveness, we would need a clear definition of the goal state, but the reasonable objective of public safety has …

  • Assessment of perceived general self-efficacy on the internet: Data collection in cyberspace

Ralf Schwarzer, John Mueller et al.•ARTICLE•Anxiety, Stress & Coping•1999

General perceived self-efficacy pertains to optimistic beliefs about being able to cope with a large variety of stressors. It is measured with a ten-item scale that has proven useful in cross-cultural research. Previous findings suggest that the construct is universal and that it applies to the majority of cultures worldwide. The present investigation adds a new facet to it: can perceived self-efficacy be measured as part of an interactive comput…

  • Fred Astaire and the Integrated Musical

    John Mueller, John H Mueller•ARTICLE•Cinema Journal•1984•Cited by: 1

A considerable literature has grown in the quest for the ideally integrated musical-a musical where song, dance, and story are artfully blended to produce a combined effect. The two parts of this paper seek to add to this literature.l The first part sets out a series of distinctions, suggesting a method for distinguishing the plot relevance of various sorts of musical numbers. The second focuses on the role of dance in the development of the inte…

    Open Access•John H Mueller, Karen L Bailis et al.•ARTICLE•British Journal of Psychology•1979•Cited by: 3

Subjects selected on the basis of test anxiety scores made a judgement about each face in a series of slides. These orienting tasks involved either abstract traits (e.g. dependability) or physical features (e.g. weight), and decisions were made relative to either an absolute criterion or self‐reference. A subsequent recognition test revealed superior performance by low‐anxiety subjects and by subjects who evaluated abstract features during study,…

  • Method of Generated Responses and Schizophrenic Deficit

    Open Access•Anne Marie Bercik, John H Mueller•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1971

Schizophrenic and control Ss were compared on the method of generated responses (MGR) and conventional paired-associates (PA), using lists of stimuli which elicited either primarily one response or several responses. The low-dominance list was more difficult, and schizophrenics were generally slower in learning. The MGR, with Ss producing their own responses, was easier than conventional PA (yoked controls). While the MGR reduced the difference b…

  • Instructions, Noun Imagery, and Priority in Free Recall

    Open Access•John H Mueller, Eugene M Jablonski•ARTICLE•Psychological Reports•1970

Exp. I varied instructional sets in free recall, with Ss instructed to combine words into sentences, mental pictures, both, or left to their own strategy. The Pictures group was superior on both high- and low-imagery items. There was no evidence for summadon of availability for Ss with both, or for superiority of the Sentences group on low-imagery items. Low-imagery words tended to be recalled early on acquisition trials but be late in output on …

  • A Sociological Approach to Musical Behavior (Comments on Merriam, "Purposes of Ethnomusicology")

    John H Mueller•ARTICLE•Ethnomusicology•1963

As recounted in Merriam's paper, there are many legitimate uses to which we moderns can put the collected musics of the pre-literate peoples. We can, for example, simply reproduce them for our own enjoyment; or we could use them as vehicles to study the respective cultures themselves. We can merely preserve them in our libraries on records or on note paper, in which case these items become museum pieces more or less alienated from the culture fro…

  • The Folkway of Art: An Analysis of the Social Theories of Art

    John H Mueller•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1938•Cited by: 2

For a century or more the analysis of art and aesthetics has been practiced chiefly by philosophers and artists. The fields of art and science were considered essentially antithetical in methodology as well as in practice. Art was the product of the intuition of the privileged man, and science of the disciplined reason which almost anyone could exercise. Although the "great man theory" of art still lingers, there is evidence of an interest in the…

  • Methods of Measurement of Aesthetic Folkways

    John H Mueller•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1946

The applicability of standard statistical devices to the field of aesthetic folkways is explored. Orchestral repertoires of the leading symphony societies were analyzed from the date of founding to the present. Various statistical measures are here applied to selected segments of this history to illustrate the degree of consensus and difference of taste between cities; the weight of conductors and political events in the formation of taste; the l…
