  • Themes and Threads of Family Theories: A Brief History

    Bert N Adams•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Family…•2010•Cited by: 8

This paper provides the historical context for the ideas and issues that have been central to family theories for the past several decades. We begin with patriarchy and modernization (especially the removal of productive work from the home) in the 19th century. These theoretical variables are followed by functionalism and evolutionism in the mid-20th century, and then technology, globalism, and the demographic transition at the end of the 20th ce…

Many changes are occurring in the world's families. Some observers feel that the changes are destructive, whereas others see them as leading to new opportunities and understanding. Issues in international family studies include regional limitations and the various aspects of doing research cross-culturally. Knowledge regarding certain categories of families, inheritance, and the social psychology of families is incomplete. There are, however, som…

  • Kikuyu Bridewealth and Polygyny Today

Bert N Adams, Edward Mburugu•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Family…•1994

This study of the Kikuyu today looked at bridewealth and polygyny. The sample was about 300 30-40 year-olds, divided between residents of Nairobi and rural Kiambu. The families of almost all the male respondents had paid bridewealth at their marriages - ordinarily a combination of cash and livestock, and there was considerable complaint about cost. About one in six of the male respondents either were currently in polygynous relationships, or plan…

    Bert N Adams•ARTICLE•Journal of Comparative Family…•1988

This paper has two foci: it is about Reuben Hills contributions to family sociology, and about the state of family sociology today. Hills contributions to family stress, developmental theory, theory development, and international family study are reviewed in some detail, along with briefer references to other areas in which he researched and wrote. The paper closes with a catalogue of later developments in the family field which he presaged; ofte…

Bert N Adams•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•1985•Cited by: 2

Coming across such a title, one would very likely expect to read about what is wrong with the family today and what should be done about it. That, however, is not the intention of this paper. Rather, I want to raise the issue of what is meant when the language of problems and solutions is used. The aim is to stimulate our thinking about the value-ladenness of the institution with which we deal as professionals. I organize this discussion under th…

  • Interaction Theory and the Social Network

    Bert N Adams•ARTICLE•Sociometry•1967•Cited by: 12

Interaction theorists have delineated the close association in friendship relations between value consensus, affectional closeness, and interaction. Categorical investigations of the social network have focused upon frequency of interaction with friends and kin. In the present paper a componential theory of attraction in the social network is developed in order to link previous theoretical discussions with the empirical social network categories.…

  • Economics, Family Structure, and College Attendance

    Bert N Adams, Miles T Meidam•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1968•Cited by: 2

Family economics and economic values are posited as accounting for both socioeconomic and family structural variations in college attendance. To explore these assumptions, data from 1,442 young married adults are examined. Father's occupational status is found to be highly related, and the individual's sex slightly related, to college attendance, favoring white-collar offspring and males, respectively. Three family structural factors-sibship size…

  • Structural Factors Affecting Parental Aid to Married Children

Bert N Adams•ARTICLE•Journal of Marriage and the Family•1964•Cited by: 2

The presence of a help pattern between parents and their married children has been established. This paper seeks to determine the effects of four factors upon parental aid to married children: residential propinquity, length of the child's marriage, occupational stratum, and sex of the child. Important findings include: (1) the verification of Litwak's statement that residential distance need not inhibit the giving of financial aid and gifts; (2)…

  • The Middle-Class Adult and His Widowed or Still-Married Mother

    Bert N Adams•ARTICLE•Social Problems•1968•Cited by: 1•References: 5

In this paper the relations of a sample of middle-class adults and their widowed mothers are compared with relations between an age-matched sample and their mothers when their fathers are still living. Balance appears crucial to satisfactory relations with the widowed mother; and this tends to be achieved between daughters and their mothers. Young adult males, however, find their relations with a widowed mother characterized primarily by keeping …

As the number of birth order studies continues to burgeon, it seems appropriate to review the state of this research area. This paper examines theories, findings, problems, and possibilities. Theories which incorporate the guiding assumptions of most birth order studies include intrauterine or physiological, only-child uniqueness, dethronement, anxious or relaxed parent, sibling influence, and economic. Findings are compiled under personality adj…
