  • Properties of a Latent Trait Reliability Coefficient

    Open Access•David J Bartholomew, Edward L Bassin et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•1993•Cited by: 1•References: 7

This article takes as its point of departure a coefficient for gauging the reliability of composites based on a fitting of a logit model with normal prior to dichotomous items pertaining to social attitudes (abortion) and/or life feelings (alienation). The effect of item locations on that coefficient relative to that of item slopes is analyzed by means of simulated data. The sampling variation to which that coefficient is subject is investigated …

  • Reliability of Attitude Scores Based on a Latent Trait Model

    David J Bartholomew, Karl F Schuessler et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Methodology•1991•Cited by: 1

In this paper we present a coefficient for measuring the reliability of scores based on a fitting of a logit model with normal prior to k dichotomous items, and we consider methods of estimating the constituent terms on which that coefficient rests. We organize numerical examples around five topics: (1) the reliability of individual items, (2) reliability and goodness of fit, (3) scale differences in reliability within and between samples, (4) th…

  • A Hierarchy for Some Latent Structure Models

    Open Access•Mark Reiser, Karl F Schuessler et al.•ARTICLE•Sociological Methods & Research•1991•Cited by: 2•References: 16

In this article we consider some latent variable models for dichotomous manifest variables that have recently appeared in sociology. The latent trait models considered are a logit/probit one-parameter, a logit/probit two-parameter, and a log-linear model. Some related latent class models for response consistency are also considered. We discuss both statistical and logical relations among these models and propose strategies for model selection, de…

    Karl Schuessler, Larry Freshnock•ARTICLE•Social Forces•1978

This study investigates the correlation between 31 social life tests within and across groupings by title, by concept, and by factor weights; also the principal dimensions of the 107 items appearing in those tests. Unadjusted test correlations tend to be larger within groupings than across them; however, correlations adjusted for overlapping items show little or no difference within and between groupings. Item correlations contain eight significa…

  • Analysis of Ratio Variables: Opportunities and Pitfalls

    Karl Schuessler•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1974•Cited by: 16

In sociological studies it is usually instructive, if not essential, to express the statistical characteristics of a ratio variable in terms of the component variables from which it was formed. Such an analysis may be carried out on either the component variables. To exemplify this approach, Pearson's approximation formulas are introduced and applied to numerical examples. Topics in sociology that might be profitably considered from this point of…

    Open Access•Harold E Driver, Karl F Schuessler et al.•ARTICLE•American Anthropologist•1967•Cited by: 32•References: 35

This paper parallels that of Sawyer and LeVine (1966) in some respects: it reduces Murdock's 210 categories to 30 variables, and intercorrelates and factor-analyzes the variables for the six world subdivisions as well as for the entire world. Differences from Sawyer's and LeVine's treatment include the use of Cramér's coefficient to compare all categories, the opposition of the modal category to the others to produce the 30 dichotomous variables,…

  • Personality Characteristics of Criminals

Karl F Schuessler, Karl Schuessler et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1950•Cited by: 11

During the last twenty-five years objective personality tests have been widely used to investigate differences between criminals and noncriminals. Of 113 such comparisons, 42 per cent showed differences in favor of the noncriminals, while the remainder were indeterminate. The doubtful validity of many of the obtained differences, as well as the lack of consistency in the combined results, makes it impossible to conclude from these data that crimi…

    Karl Schuessler•ARTICLE•Sociological Methodology•1969•Cited by: 3

The major purposes of this article are four in number: (1) to direct attention to the analysis of covariance as a method of study; (2) to note the way in which certain techniques of data analysis are related to this method; (3) to mention illustratively at least one problem that might be profitably pursued from this standpoint; and (4) to cite references that will serve as points of entry into a possibly useful literature which may be unfamiliar …

T rHIS is a second paper dealing with the development of children's concepts of money. In the first paper a group of business-class children was discussed.' Evidence showed that both boys and girls consistently pass through stages of learning, and that each stage is based upon knowledge characteristic of previous stages. Descriptions of behavior at each level were given, and certain limits which age places upon the attainment of levels were noted…

the course of urban development-particularly of changes in social stratification. Whatever breaking points are used to distinguish occupational groups, the data offer some question as to the type of relationship that is involved. Throughout the years of fertility experience covered by the 1910 and 1940 data, the evidence suggests that it is more accurate to label the relation between fertility and socio-economic status as measured by occupation a…
