Kent State in Context
The year 2020 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the May 4th tragedy at Kent State University. This article reviews the use of the National Guard in campus disorders from 1965 through June 1970 in order to identify factors that contributed to its effectiveness and to the likelihood of Guard violence. The Guard was most successful in dealing with disorders that most resembled urban riots earlier in the 1960s. The Guard was successful in controllin…

Social Mission Metrics
The social mission, which is focused on advancing social justice and health equity, has gained recognition as an important aspect of health professions education. However, there is currently no established method to measure a school’s commitment to these activities. In this Perspective, the authors describe the development of a new tool to measure the social mission at dental, medical, and nursing schools across the United States, and they reflec…
The Effects of Local Immigration Enforcement on Crime and Disorder
Overview of
Research Summary This study evaluates a local immigration enforcement policy implemented in Prince William County, Virginia, in 2008. In addition to joining the federal 287(g) program, the County adopted a policy that initially required officers to check the immigration status of people they detained, but the policy was later amended to require immigration checks only for arrestees. Using a pre–post, quasi‐experimental design, we examined the pol…

Objectives. This study determined the extent to which churches in the South were providing mental health and social services to congregations and had established linkages with formal systems of care. Methods. A computer-assisted telephone interview (CATI) survey was conducted with pastors from 269 Southern churches. Results. Visible Colleges
We examine the structure of sociology using data on overlapping memberships in the disci- pline's visible colleges, the specialty sections of the American Sociological Association. Hypotheses about the structure of joint specialization in sociology are derived fr-om four general theories of professional and scientific specialization: ideational theory, political- economic theory, professional power theory, and intellect tual ciriclelnetwork theor…

The Challenge of Social Control
Dimensions of Association in Sociology
Sociologists' voluntary memberships in specialty sections within the American Sociological Association (ASA) can be assumed to reflect both the social organization of an intellectual society and the cognitive structure of the discipline's subject matter. Data aescribing the frequencies of joint memberships in each pair of the ASA's specialty sections from 198U to 1984 are analyzed using multidimensional scaling and clustering techniques. A large …

Is Suburbanization Slowing Down? Recent Trends in Population Deconcentration in U.S. Metropolitan Areas
After several decades of population deconcentration in American metropolitan areas, examination of 1970 to 1975 data suggests tentatively that deconcentration has not recently slackened. Population deconcentration or suburbanization has not reversed, and there is no evidence of faster growth in central cities than in suburban areas. This study uses demographic data on over 200 Standard Metropolitan Statistical Areas (smsas) in 1970 and 1975, comp…
Race, Political Orientation, and Participation
Competing theories about differences between American blacks and whites in rates of political participation and joining of voluntary organizations are tested using data from a 1967 national sample survey. Prior literature offers four theories that seek to explain these differences: ethnic community theory, compensatory theory, isolation theory, and cultural inhibition theory. A typology of political orientations is developed, based on the underly…
Machine Politics in Transition
Machine Politics in Transition
Since 1932 elections and decision making in Chicago have been dominated by the Regular Democratic Organization of Cook County, led for a quarter of a century by the late Mayor Richard J. Daley. The extraordinary longevity of this Democratic machine provides the basis for this penetrating investigation into the nature of machine politics and grassroots party organization. For three years, Thomas M. Guterbock participated in the daily activities of…
Sociology and the Land-Use Problem
The discipline of sociology can make a distinctive contribution to the development of solutions to land-use issues. Sociology is distinguished from other social science disci plines by its stress on people's moral and emotional motivations and by its concern with criteria of equity and community viability. The effects of land-use patterns on community viability are not as great as is claimed by critics of urban sprawl, and the relationship betwee…
The Political Economy of Urban Revitalization
The Marxian and pluralist approaches to the study of inner-city revitalization are described and contrasted. Each approach works from different assumptions about the role of the state, the functions of economic development, and the causes of urban change. However, the approaches agree that there is mutual interdependence among cultural, political, economic, and ecological determinants of gentrification, and this is seen as a basis for a possible …
