  • Contested Legitimacy in Ferguson: Nine Hours on Canfield Drive

    Open Access•Joshua Bloom•BOOK•Contested Legitimacy in Ferguson•2022

At noon on August 9, 2014 when Michael Brown was killed on Canfield Drive in Ferguson, there was little protest. But by 9 pm, dozens were nonviolently defying police armed with military style weapons, armored vehicles, helicopters, and snarling dogs. • The Dynamics of Repression and Insurgent Practice in the Black Liberation Struggle

    Joshua Bloom•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•2020•Cited by: 7•References: 89

In Oakland, California, in 1966, community college students Bobby Seale and Huey Newton armed themselves, began patrolli…

  • The Dynamics of Opportunity and Insurgent Practice: How Black Anti-colonialists Compelled Truman to Advocate Civil Rights

    Open Access•Joshua Bloom•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•2015•Cited by: 18•References: 63

Political opportunity theory has proven extremely generative, highlighting the importance of macro-structural shifts in making established authorities vulnerable to insurgent challenge. But as critics point out, political opportunity theory flattens both culture and agency, and has fared poorly in explaining the timing of insurgency. Re-theorizing opportunity as leveraged by particular practices, rather than independently conferring to groups, re…
