Altruism, Morality, and Social Solidarity as a Field of Study
The study of altruism, morality, and social solidarity is now in the process of becoming a recognized field of specialization in sociology. These phenomena were of central concern in the earlier years of sociology. However, with the exception of the writings of some individual scholars, they have been given scant attention in the last 50 years. Interest in their study is now reawakening. Virtue and the Altruistic Personality
This paper applies the concept of virtue to an analysis of theory and research pertaining to the altruistic personality. Five primary virtues are considered: temperance, fortitude, justice, charity, prudence. The virtues are presented as the personality structure underlying altruistic motivation and behavior. This study presents data to validate a measure of love, the Virtue-Attraction Scale (VAS). Love is conceptualized as two basic dimensions: virtue and attraction. Virtue is love which is directed toward furthering the welfare of another, while attraction is love based upon gratifications which are received from the relationship. The study measures 712 subjects' self-reported love for their mothers and fathers (during their teenage years), and subj…

Data consist of reactions of white respondents to the Watts Riot. An Index of Protest Definition is presented. Findings indicate that protest definition is most strongly predicted by credibility based upon a predisposing experience or ideology. Forming subjective common cause with protestors app…
Interracial Social Contact and Middle-Class White Reactions to the Watts Riot
With data collected shortly after the Watts riot, the reactions of a sample of white middle-class respondents are studied. It is found that prior social contact with Negroes is an important determiner of white attitudes toward the disorder. Those lacking contact are more fearful of Negroes, cite more outside agitator explanations, evidence more feelings of increased social distance, and voice more punitive responses than those having contact. In …
