This paper is concerned with testing the hypothesis that women will report more psychiatric symptoms than will men with an equal number of physical illnesses. Our hypothesis arises from an assessment of the societal definitions of what is appropriate or inappropriate behavior for someone occupying the status of male or female. Dissatisfaction and Desire for Change Among Chilean Hospital Workers
The paper compares social attitudes of Chilean professional and nonprofessional hospital workers, all from the same major National Health Service hospital in Santiago, Chile. Compared with nonprofesionalis, professionals were more modernistic, more satisfied, more likely to endorse broad and general programs of social change, but a good deal less likely to support militant union intervention for accomplishing short-term change. This paper first focuses on the relationships between students' satisfaction with the academic and social aspects of college life and their emotional status. It then goes on to investigate how these relationships influence students' inclinations to “adopt the sick role.” Analysis of data from a sample of undergraduates at a men's liberal arts college reveals that the two intervening variables, friendship solidarity and academic satisfaction, are …

Status Orientation and Ethnic Sentiment Among Undergraduates
Jewish and non-Jewish undergraduates have different inclinations to indorse pro- and anti-Semitic stereotypes, but these tendencies are shown to depend upon their status orientations as well as upon their ethnicity. Jewish students who are "work oriented" or "outspoken" score lower on a measure of Philo-Semitism than those who are "leisure oriented" or "reticent." Sixty Negro and forty white delinquent boys, interviewed while they were residents of a state training school, provided materials for a comparative analysis of relationships between racial membership and delinquency. The Negro boys tended to derive from lower-status families more than the white, and they were also more likely to have been sent to training school for having committed more serious offenses.
