The Many Forms and Facets of Morality in Dialogue
On Human Beings, Computers and Representational-Computational vs Hermeneutic-Dialogical Approaches to Human Cognition and Communication
Current representational-computational approaches to human cognition and communication, it is argued, represent natural-scientifically coached ramifications of an analyticrationalist philosophical tradition concerned with formal features D of 'pure' and de-contextualized human reason. Scholars conducting their inquiries within hermeneutic-dialogically founded traditions, on the other hand, are seriously concerned with the inherent perspectivity o…

On the Dawning of Different Aspects of Life in a Pluralistic Social World
The growing concern with meaning within linguistics, sociology and psychology may be interpreted as a sign of emancipation from a rather puritan and poorly understood social scientific variant of positivistic philosophy. Recent reentries of the term meaning on scenes of scientific and philosophical discourse, however, tend to be accompanied by explicitly held and/or tacitly endorsed monistic assumptions about our language and the world (Rommetvei…
Prospective Social Psychological Contributions To a Truly Interdisciplinary Understanding of Ordinary Language
Formal truth-conditional semantics and a definite 'written language bias' within traditional linguistics have lent academic respectability to naive and pervasive pre-theoretical conceptions of language as some sort of a conduit transmitting meaning. The Cartesian variant of the myth of literal meaning reifies meaning in terms of linguistically mediated mental representations, and main stream multidisciplinary research on ordinary language is inde…
Utterances in Vacuo and in Contexts
Article UTTERANCES IN VACUO AND IN CONTEXTS: AN EXPERIMENTAL AND THEORETICAL EXPLORATION OF SOME INTERRELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN WHAT IS HEARD AND WHAT IS SEEN OR IMAGINED was published on January 1, 1975 in the journal Linguistics (volume 13, issue 153)
A study of ‘chinking’ in transmission of messages
Experimental Manipulation of the Production of Active and Passive Voice in Children
Two experiments were carried out in an attempt to manipulate the voice in which children encoded a denotative domain of events. In Experiment I the direction in which the child visually scanned a picture was varied ; in Experiment II the child's " focus of attention " was manipulated through the type of question asked of him about a picture. In general, when the acted-upon element or recipient of the action, as opposed to the actor, was presented…
