  • Cultural information dynamics and the rise of women in Norway’s state and military

    Open Access•Chris Girard•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2025

The growing presence of women in the Norwegian state and military heralds an epoch-making, worldwide transformation. A key challenge is to explain why institutions which excluded women for more than a millennium no longer promote all-male membership. This tectonic shift is investigated with a data-based synthetical methodology. Multidisciplinary evidence going back five thousand years is combined with a graphical analysis of two centuries of time…

  • Insulating an Ideology

    Open Access•Chris Girard, Guillermo J Grenier et al.•ARTICLE•Hispanic Journal of Behavioral…•2008•Cited by: 6•References: 13

Many Cuban Americans embrace a distinctive anti-Castro ideology. Although this ideology supports the embargo against Cuba—purportedly to bring about the Castro regime's compliance or collapse—the real objectives may be more symbolic than practical. Ultimately, the institutional completeness provided by the enclave in South Florida insulates and regenerates this “exile” ideology. The authors hypothesize that if more than one half of an immigrant's…

  • Recent Cuban Immigrants and Native-Born African Americans Leaving Welfare

    Open Access•Peter Cattan, Chris Girard•ARTICLE•Hispanic Journal of Behavioral…•2004•References: 20

Studies of the economic well-being of women leaving welfare generally focus on the efforts of the welfare leaver herself. We argue that it is also important to take into account the employment and earnings of others in her household. Among women in Miami-Dade County (Florida) who left welfare between October 1999 and January 2000, our data show that households with multiple earners fared far better than others across several indicators of economi…

Cross-sectional data were collected in face-to-face interviews from 120 substance abusing adolescents undergoing treatment. Three separate multiple regression models were tested, one using a general measure of risky sexual behavior and the others using measures of s…

    Chris Girard•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1993•Cited by: 39•References: 3
