Social desirability and Wiggins's MMPI content scales
Using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) item pool, Wiggins (1966) developed 13 scales, each with a homogeneous content. The 13 scales, along with marker scales for the 1st 3 MMPI factors, Edward's social desirability (SD), Welsh's repression (R), and Wiggins's social desirability (Sd) respectively were scored in the MMPI. The same scales were scored in an Experimental Multiphasic Personality Inventory (EMPI). A principal-comp…

A principal-components analysis of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory factor scales
Johnson, Butcher, Null, and Johnson (1984) reported on factor scales developed from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI). A principal-components analysis of the 21 factor scales and Edwards's (1957) Social Desirability (SD) scale gave 5 factors. The SD scale had the highest absolute loading on the 1st MMPI factor. Also, the 1st-factor loadings of the scales were linearly related to the SD intensity intensity index of the scales.…

The R Scale and Acquiescent Tendencies on Scales Consisting of Items from the CPI, PRF, and EPI
Previous studies involving the R scale of the MMPI as a measure of acquiescent tendencies were replicated with items from the California Psychological Inventory, the Personality Research Form AA, and Booklet II of the Edwards Personality Inventory. The results obtained support the interpretation of scores on the R scale as measuring acquiescent tendencies with respect to items with a non-pathological content
Social Desirability and the TSC Mmpi Scales
The seven Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) scales developed by Tryon, Stein, and Chu were intercorrelated and factor analyzed by the method of principal components. Included in the analysis were three marker scales for the first three principal components of the MMPI: the SD scale, the R scale, and the L scale, respectively. All of the TSC scales had loadings of .61 OT higher on the first principal component marked by the SD sca…
Social Desirability and the TSC Scales
A replication of a study by Edwards, Klockars, and Abbott, 1970, using Tryon's sample, showed that each of the seven TSC scales had its highest loading on the first principal component. The results are in agreement with those obtained with a college sample

Further Evidence regarding the R Scale of the MMPI as a Measure of Acquiescence
High- and low-scoring groups on the R scale of the MMPI were selected For each group the mean probability of a True response, P(T), on 26 scales was obtained. The social desirability scale values of the items increased from scale to scale. On all 26 scales, low scorers on the R scale had a higher mean probability of a True response than high scorers. The regression lines of P(T) on SDSV for the two groups had approximately the same slopes and dif…
A Comparison of 57 MMPI Scales and 57 Experimental Scales Matched with the MMPI Scales in Terms of Item Social Desirability Scale Values and Probabilities of Endorsement
Social Desirability and Probability of Endorsement of Items in the Yatabe-Guilford Personality Inventory
Noguchi (1964) correlated probability of item endorsement, P ( T ) , and social desirability scale value (SDSV) for the 120 items in the Yatabe-Guilford Personality Inventory (YGPI) using Japanese students as Ss. 7s wete .30 for males and .56 for females. Because these 7s are considerably lower than those found berween P(T) and SDSV for students in the United States, it was decided to repeat Noguchi's srudy with students at the University of Wash…
Response Sets in Standard and Experimental Personality Scales
In a factor analysis of 58 Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) scales and 3 other personality scales (Edwards, Diers, and Walker, 1962), it was found that the first factor could be interpreted as the tendency to give socially desirable responses and the second as the tendency to give acquiescent responses. The third factor was tentatively identified as the tendency to falsify answers to personality items. The present study was unde…

The signs of incipient fascism
The writer's study of attitudes of 250 persons in Akron differs somewhat from Stagner's study (see 11: 4256, 4257; 16: 4936) in showing a direct increase of fascist attitudes with increasing level of income. But it agrees with many other studies in showing a widespread belief in principles of fascism by persons who reject the label. Democratic principles are not as deeply founded in this country as we might hope, and they need to be strengthened …

Unlabeled fascist attitudes
The findings of this study would seem to be in accord with those of Stagner, Raskin, and Cook, in which Stagner's scale was used. The major difference between the scale used here and Stagner's scale lies in the method of scoring and in the aspects of fascist ideology covered by the various items. While none of the groups investigated was markedly pro-fascist, the range of scores indicates that some college students have a far greater degree of sy…

The relationship between the judged desirability of a trait and the probability that the trait will be endorsed.
There is a rather common suspicion among many psychologists that subjects tend to give what are considered to be socially desirable responses to items in personality inventories. This suspicion has been given public expression in a recent article by Gordon (3, p. 407) who comments upon . . the motivation of a majority of respondents to mark socially acceptable alternatives to items, rather than those which they believe apply to themselves. We hav…

Techniques of attitude scale construction.
Another method for constructing an attitude scale that makes use of both judgments and responses is described in Chapter 8. This method is termed the scale-discrimination technique. It is an early effort upon the part of Kilpatrick and myself at a synthesis of a scaling and a response method for developing an attitude scale. H-technique, as described in Chapter 9, is also a response method. It has as its objective the improvement of a cumulative …

A Short Form of the MMPI
A rationale and method for predicting mean scores on personality scales of the True-False type, based upon social desirability considerations, has been described by Edwards ( 1961). He also suggested that the procedure used in predicting group means might be extended to the prediction of individual scores. To use his prediction equation for individual scores, an estimate of the individual's probability of a socially desirable response to a person…
