Development of Work and Family Commitments
Women and men medical students' intended commitments to profession and family were explored at three times during their training. At the global level, women and men anticipated giving equal balance to family and profession in the future. At a more specific level, there were significant gender differences in planned commitments to profession and to family. Although all students anticipated giving more hours per week to professional roles, men anti…

Reciprocal Interaction and Similarity of Personality Attributes
In a study of the relationship between similarity of personality and interaction choices, 336 students gave up to ten choices within fifty person classes. Personality variables were measured two years before sociometric choices (before acquaintance) and at the time of the choices. Reciprocal interaction pairs were more similar on a derived authoritarianism scale of the Omnibus Personality Inventory (OPI) than no-choice pairs at the time of the ch…

The logic for the behavior of these regulatory bodies is quite interesting given the absence of any demonstrable evidence that they have succeeded i…
Effects of preparatory information about sensations, threat of pain, and attention on cold pressor distress
Pain experience is conceptualized as a combination of stimulus sensations (e.g., aching) and emotional distress. In Experiment 1, less distress was reported to cold pressor stimulation by subjects first told about stimulus sensations than by subjects who were uninformed or were told about symptoms of bodily arousal (e.g., tension). Adding a pain warning to sensation information blocked distress reduction, presumably by eliciting an emotional inte…

Pattern Perception, Conceptual Spaces, and Dimensional Limitations on Information Processing
A conceptual space was defined as the collection of all linearly inde- pendent psychological dimensions underlying the multidimensional scaling of a set of tasks. When a single subject scaled a sample of random polygons under fifteen different task conditions, a total of ten linearly independent dimensions was obtained. The number of obtained dimensions in individual tasks ranged between 1 and 3. The results suggest the existence o f a dimensiona…
