  • Recidivism Among Paroled Property Offenders Released During a Period of Prison Reform

    Open Access•Hee-Jong Joo, HEE‐JONG JOO et al.•ARTICLE•Criminology•1995•Cited by: 6•References: 11

Data from four successive yearly cohorts and one special early release cohort of parolees are used to explore the question of whether rapid statewide changes in the administration of criminal justice affected the patterns of recidivism among persons on parole for property offenses. Given the earlier broadly constructed research reported by Ekland–Olson et al. (1993), and their conclusion that variation in shifting policies would have different ef…

  • Justice Under Pressure

    Open Access•Sheldon Ekland-Olson, H-J Joo et al.•BOOK•Justice under Pressure•1993

Justice Under Pressure analyzes the effects of prison crowding on the justice system. The authors focus on dramatic changes in the administration of criminal justice in Texas during the 1980s and the influence of those changes on the three-year rates among parolees released between 1984 and 1987. Setting out to identify differences in recidivism and the crime rate as a result of the changes instituted in Texas, the authors report the findings of …

  • The Response of the Criminal Justice System to Prison Overcrowding

    Open Access•William R Kelly, Sheldon Ekland-Olson•ARTICLE•Law & Society Review•1991•Cited by: 6•References: 2

Over the past decade crowded prison conditions became the subject for lawsuits across the country, resulting in restrictions on the “capacity” of prison systems in a number of states. These restrictions produced pressures throughout the criminal justice system, from arrest to release on parole. The question addressed in this research is whether these restrictions and pressures affected the probability and pattern of return to prison among parolee…

We replicate previous research investigating changes in racial occupational inequality disaggregated by age and level of educational attainment (Hare, 1965; Siegel, 1965; Johnson and Sell, 1976) and then extend this research in four ways. First, wre update previous analyses by examining change in inequality between 1970 and 1980. Second, wre perform separate analyses by region as tell as analyses for the nation as a whole. • Reply to Sloan

    William R Kelly, Phillips Cutright•ARTICLE•Sociological Focus•1984•References: 1

Sloan (1984) argues that annual changes in marital fertility of Swedish wives aged 35-39 between 1911 and 1974 is not a result of annual changes in the use of birth control, but is due to changes in health conditions that increase or decrease marital fertility. As evidence of the lack of effect of contraceptive practice on fertility Sloan cites a study published in 1916 whose author concluded that contraceptive use or nonuse had no effect on fami…

  • A Time Series Analysis of Swedish Illegitimacy Rates, 1911–1974

    William R Kelly, Phillips Cutright•ARTICLE•Sociological Focus•1983•Cited by: 2•References: 5

Using a sociodemographic model of the determinants of illegitimacy rates, a multivariate regression analysis of annual change in age-specific Swedish illegitimacy rates is applied to the 1911-74 period. The proxy measure of change in sexual activity was significant for all age groups. Legitimation rates for out-of-wedlock conceived births were significant for all ages except teenagers, and the final predictor, women's status, was significant for …

  • Racial Insurgency, the State, and Welfare Expansion

    L W Isaac, Larry Isaac et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1981•Cited by: 29

This paper addresses systematically the possible nexus between insurgent political action and the state apparatus, concentrating specifically on the relationship between urban riots and welfare or reliefgiving activity in the postwar United States. The theoretical warrant for the analysis has its genesis in Piven and Cloward's influential thesis relating insurgency and relief giving in capitalist society. This perspective is juxtaposed with the o…

    William R Kelly, Phillips Cutright•ARTICLE•Sociological Focus•1980•Cited by: 11•References: 7

We specify a revised model of the demographic transition which accounts for national fertility levels and changes over the past two decades. The model includes cultural, geographic, demographic and family planning program variables, in addition to a measure of national socio-economic modernization. Using crude birth rates for 117 countries, we operationalize and then apply the revised model to 1974 rates, and then test a longitudinal model of 195…

Ilene Nagel Bernstein, William R Kelly et al.•ARTICLE•American Sociological Review•1977•Cited by: 73•References: 6

Recent reformulations of the societal reaction theory argue that the thesis is a perspective rather than a theory, and that the perspective is meant to provide a set of sensitizing concepts to those researching deviance. This research examines the degree of congruence between hypotheses deduced from those assertions and a set of real world occurrences.Data for a sample of male defendants charged with felony offenses are examined to estimate the ef…

  • Comment on charles F. Hohm’s “social security and fertility

Open Access•William R Kelly, Phillips Cutright et al.•ARTICLE•Demography•1976

Theoretical and empirical efforts to identify social and economic conditions that discourage high rates now include policy-relevant variables-programs that can be introduced by a government to reduce (Burch, 1975). Recent empirical work by Hohm (1975) suggests that government-administered old age social security programs will reduce fertility. The hypothesis that such programs lower is based on an assumption that parents regulate on the basis of …

David Snyder, David V Snyder et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Sociology•1976•Cited by: 18

We use a unique source of data on each of over 6,000 strikes (many of them violent) occurring in Italy from 1878 to 1903 to address two major issues in the study of collective violence: the determinants of violence (the conditions under which conflicts become violent) and its consequences (whether violence promotes successful collective action). We also suggest strategic advantages of individual event data over the aggregate analyses which domina…
