Culture and Multiculturalism: A Canadian Reflection

The Paradox of Hegemony and the "Multiculturalism of the Individual"
Widely popular social ideals often manifest a paradox of hegemony, a vulnerability to a particular type of erosion that occurs when opponents abandon their explicit attacks, seeking instead to blunt and transform the ideal through an ostensible conversion to it. Christian Joppke's Is multiculturalism dead? (2017) is a case in point. Having long proclaimed the "retreat" of multiculturalism, Joppke now advocates a "multiculturalism of the individua…

Does Canadian Multiculturalism Survive through State Repression
Emma Ambrose and Cas Mudde argued in this journal that the absence of far-right parties in Canada can be attributed, among other factors, to “strong state repression of dissent” on multiculturalism policy. This article provides numerous examples of such dissent, to show that the state repression invoked by Ambrose and Mudde does not exist. The article also argues that certain “supply-side” explanations for the absence of a strong far-right apply …
Positivism: Paradigm or culture
Much post-positivist policy theory implies that positivism exists as a self-protecting paradigm. Inspired by a one-sided reading of Kuhn, this understanding suggests that policy positivism must be overcome as a whole. This approach is problematic. In particular, there are important contradictions between various elements commonly said to be part of the positivist paradigm, contradictions that make it difficult to believe that the paradigm can be …

S tout, R awls, and the Idea of Public Reason
J effrey S tout claims that J ohn R awls's idea of public reason ( IPR ) has contributed to a C hristian backlash against liberalism. This essay argues that those whom S tout calls “antiliberal traditionalists” have misunderstood R awls in important ways, and goes on to consider S tout's own critiques of the IPR . While R awls's idea is often interpreted as a blanket prohibition on religious reasoning outside church and home, the essay will show …

If I were called upon to write a book which was to be vested with the highest authority, I should preter to write it in such a way that a reader could find re-echoed in my words whatever truths he was able to apprehend. (Augustine, Confessions, 12.31) Allan Bloom? The man whose Closing of the American Mind "best articu- lates the critique" of political correctness and "represents the key text" (Piatt 1992, 123), who demonstrates "an excessively o…

Duet for Peasant and Socialist Revolutionary, with Obbligato Feminism: Lessons of the Nicaraguan Case
In 1795, Beethoven wrote short piece with the whimsical title, Duet for Viola, Cello, and Two Eyeglasses. Obbligato denotes a part which must not be omitted, part which is essential to the structure, or at least to the effect. This essay is about another duet: between the peasantry and the socialist revolutionaries of Nicaragua's Sandinista Front for National Liberation (FSLN). The duet was, unfortunately, much less harmonious than those created …
