The Covid-19 Pandemic and Sexual Debut Among South Korean Adolescents
Objective: This study assesses the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic on the first time Korean adolescents have sex. Methods: The study examines 2017–2021 data from an annual, cross-sectional survey. Results: There is a significant drop in the percentages of male adolescents initiating sexual intercourse in 2020 and noticeable rebounds in 2021. However, the sexual debut among female students shows no significant change. Conclusions: We …
Sexual debut and college entrance among South Korean adolescents
INTRODUCTION: For the past few decades, numerous theoretical perspectives have predicted a negative association between adolescent sexual debut and the probability of college entrance. The present article extends the literature by using nationally representative longitudinal data from South Korea to assess these perspectives. METHODS: Drawing on longitudinal data from South Korea, this article examined the impact of becoming sexually active betwe…
Fertility differentials between Korean and international marriage couples in South Korea
Amid high hopes that the rise of international marriage will boost fertility rates in South Korea, this article assesses fertility differentials between Korean and international marriage couples. Espousing the theoretical position that fertility decisions need to be viewed from a couple perspective, we seek to build a new framework that goes beyond the traditional immigrant fertility literature. To test the formulated hypotheses, we compared fert…
Active Life Expectancy of Elderly Koreans, 1994–2011
Drawing on data from South Korea, this paper attempts to assess three dominant views on the evolution of morbidity and mortality of the elderly: expansion of morbidity, compression of morbidity, and dynamic equilibrium. The expansion of morbidity perspective argues that elongated life expectancy would comprise of, in large part, disabled life expectancy. The compression of morbidity theory suggests that increases in active life expectancy corresp…

Sexual Debut and Mental Health Among South Korean Adolescents
Numerous studies have demonstrated the negative influence of sexual debut during adolescence on mental health outcomes. This article contributes to this literature by investigating whether sexual debut has negative effects on mental health among South Korean adolescents and whether the timing of adolescent sexual debut matters. Drawing on longitudinal data from a nationally representative survey, we first predicted mental health outcomes at one y…
Women’s Wages and Fertility Hazards in South Korea
In an attempt to understand lowest-low fertilities in South Korea, this paper assesses the relationship between women’s wages and fertility hazards. Both women’s wage levels and the percentages of women’s wages in household income have been considered to evaluate gender equity theory. Drawing data from the Korea Labor and Income Panel Study 1998-2008, we fit the data into the Cox proportional hazards model. We find that women whose monthly wages …
Female Labour Force Participation and Fertility in South Korea
Drawing on data from the Korea Labour and Income Panel Study 1998−2008, this article attempts to assess the impact of female labour force participation on childbirth decisions in South Korea. To control for the dynamic processes through which soon-to-be mothers choose to get out of the labour force to give birth, empirical datasets using three different birth-month lag scenarios are examined: no lag; five-month lag; and eight-month lag. In additi…
On the correspondence between CAL and lagged cohort life expectancy
It has been established that under certain mortality assumptions, the current value of the Cross-sectional Average length of Life (CAL) is equal to the life expectancy for the cohort currently reaching its life expectancy. This correspondence is important, because the life expectancy for the cohort currently reaching its life expectancy, or lagged cohort life expectancy (LCLE), has been discussed in the tempo literature as a summary mortality mea…
Consequences of Parental Divorce for Child Development
In this article, I propose a three-stage estimation model to examine the effect of parental divorce on the development of children's cognitive skills and noncognitive traits. Using a framework that includes pre-, in-, and post-divorce time periods, I disentangle the complex factors affecting children of divorce. I use the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Kindergarten Class 1998 to 1999 (ECLS-K), a multiwave longitudinal dataset, to assess the t…
