Infrastructure System Obstacles and Technology Adoption by Firms in Transition Countries
This study uses business survey data to analyze firm perceptions of infrastructure systems in transition countries as obstacles to conducting business. Factors that contribute to reported perceptions are modeled, including country macroeconomic conditions, firm characteristics, and measures of overall reforms and infrastructure system reforms. Identified obstacles arise from binding constraints that limit economic growth, reflect implicit shadow …
Heterogeneity of quality of life in the later stages of first-episode psychosis recovery
Although some individuals with FEP have QoL comparable to individuals without mental ill health, QoL can remain concerningly low despite treatment efforts. Future research on interventions that target factors associated with poor QoL, such as low social inclusion, is required to counteract prolonged poor QoL in FEP

Paraprofessionals use of group school‐based instrumental mentoring: Examining process and preliminary outcomes
Many schools use paraprofessionals to implement and monitor interventions. Though paraprofessionals are cost‐effective, many questions remain about the training and skills they need to implement a wide array of school‐based interventions. In this study, we compare paraprofessionals' (i.e., undergraduates) implementation of the Group‐Academic Mentoring Program for Education Development (Group‐AMPED) to school psychology graduate students' implemen…
Real-world insights on public charging demand and infrastructure use from electric vehicles
The city of Berlin has significantly expanded public charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. As a result of this investment, real-world charging data for the city of Berlin are available for the first time. In addition to other metrics, this dataset contains specific information about carsharing vehicles. This research letter offers numerous insights into public charging demand and infrastructure. The results are only now available due to …
Assessing the impact of school-based mentoring: Common problems and solutions associated with evaluating nonprescriptive youth development programs
Like many youth development programs, most youth mentoring programs do not have prescribed practices that target specific outcomes. Because the construct of mentoring represents a broad range of potential activities, researchers face a conundrum when making generalizable causal inferences about the effects of this and similar services. On the one hand, researchers cannot make valid experimental inferences if they do not describe what they manipul…

The Economics of Casino Taxation
This chapter examines how governments in many nations and regions tax casino gambling and also considers the economic effects of that taxation. The first section analyzes the nature of casino gambling, along with the forms of taxation that governments apply to casino operations, including wagering taxes, admissions taxes, fees, and other taxes. Section 2 examines the economics of casino taxation, including market analysis of a casino game, effici…

HIV testing in a national sample of pregnant US women: Who is not getting tested
It is recommended that all pregnant women in the US receive an HIV test as early as possible during prenatal care to allow HIV-infected women to begin receiving anti-retroviral drugs when they most effectively prevent transmission. We analyzed interview data from a nationally-representative sample of pregnant women to examine the extent of HIV testing among pregnant women and the characteristics associated with testing, including access to health…

Prevalence of Risk Factors for Adverse Pregnancy Outcomes During Pregnancy and the Preconception Period—United States, 2002–2004
Women appear to be responding to messages regarding behaviors that directly affect pregnancy such as smoking, alcohol consumption and taking folic acid, but many remain unaware of the benefits of available interventions to prevent HIV transmission and birth defects. Although it appears that some women reduce their risk for adverse pregnancy outcomes after learning of their pregnancy, the data suggest that a substantial proportion of women do not.…

Contraceptive Use and Pregnancy Risk Among U.S. High School Students, 1991?2003
Improvement in the use of contraceptives by sexually active high school students during the 1990s is encouraging. To sustain this trend, programs need to encourage contraceptive use among teenagers who do not use it and to stress consistent and correct use among those who do
Condom Use and HIV Risk Among US Adults
HIV prevention programs seek to increase the use of condoms among persons at risk for acquiring HIV.[1] In recent years, the importance of condoms for prevention has remained high as the epidemic has shifted to have more impact on women and persons subject to infection through heterosexual contact.[2] Data surveys indicate increasing condom use among adolescents[3-6] and adults[7-8] since the 1980s

HIV instruction, HIV knowledge, and drug injection among high school students in the United States
BACKGROUND. The prevalence of HIV-related behaviors and determinants of these behaviors among adolescents in the United States have not been well studied. METHODS. To determine the prevalence of HIV-related drug behaviors and to assess the effects of HIV-related school-based instruction and HIV knowledge on these behaviors, data were analyzed from a 39-item, self-administered questionnaire completed by a probability sample of all students in grad…

The World Fertility Survey and Contraceptive Prevalence Surveys: A Comparison of Substantive Results
This paper deals with the findings of the World Fertility Survey (WFS) and Contraceptive Prevalence Surveys (CPSs) in five areas of common interest: fertility, contraceptive use, measuring the effect of the availability of contraceptives on levels of use, the unmet need for family planning services, and breastfeeding. The comparisons have several implications for those designing surveys of fertility and family planning in developing countries, am…

Analysis of Breastfeeding in Northeastern Brazil: Methodological and Policy Considerations
Data from the 1980 Survey of Maternal-Child Health/Family Planning in Northeastern Brazil (Bahia Paraiba Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte) indicate a mean duration of breastfeeding of 6.6 months and a mean postpartum amenorrhea of 3.8 months. Given the relatively high infant mortality in the area and the known health benefits of breastfeeding the short duration can be considered to have a deleterious effect on the health of the population. The …
Determinants of fertility in Guatemala
The 1978 Contraceptive Prevalence Survey for Guatemala provides an opportunity to examine fertility levels and a number of determinants of fertility for three broad segments of the country: the Department of Guatemala and, in the remainder of the country, the Ladino and Indian populations. While Ladinos had a much higher rate of contraceptive use than did Indians, the two groups had similar birth rates. The lack of difference in fertility appears…

Breastfeeding Effects on Birth Interval Components: A Prospective Child Health Study in Gaza
Data that were collected prospectively from a child health study conducted in Gaza show a strong relationship between breastfeeding and two major components of birth intervals, the postpartum anovulatory period and the waiting time to conception. The Gaza population is similar to other populations in the Middle East in having moderate durations of breastfeeding and short intervals between births. The finding of a strong positive association betwe…
Contraceptive Use and Fertility in Guatemala
In 1983, one-quarter of married Guatemalan women aged 15-44 years were using contraception, and female sterilization was the most prevalent method. Fertility rates for the population were at correspondingly high levels, with an overall total fertility rate of about six births per woman. Contraceptive prevalence varied by residence and ethnic group; less than 5 percent of currently married Indian women and about 50 percent of married women in the …
Contraceptive Use and Fertility in the Republic of Panama
Panama has a high prevalence of contraception, with surgical sterilization being the dominant method. Use of contraception is fairly high even in rural areas. Seventy-one percent of users named a public sector source for their contraception. High use of contraception is part of an overall program of public sector maternal and child health services that also shows substantial penetration of rural areas. The high reliance on public sector sources i…

Family Planning in Jordan: 1983 Survey Data
Data from the 1983 fertility survey in Jordan indicate that 26 percent of married women were using contraceptives, reflecting a very small relative increase in use in the seven years before the survey. Only 5 percent of nonusers stated that they desired to use a method. Other data from the same survey suggest a potential demand for contraception, for spacing as well as limiting births, among those not using. For example, many recent pregnancies w…

A Component Analysis of Recent Fertility Decline in Singapore
To aid in achieving demographic goals, since 1968 the government of Singapore has passed a series of laws designed to limit family size. Policies were instituted in 1968 to discourage couples from having more than three children; policies introduced in 1973 discouraged having more than two. Trends in fertility rates and in the numbers of abortions and sterilizations in recent years are consistent with the intent of these social policies. Decline …

The Development of Social Behavior
The modern interest in child development has given rise to much research on social behavior. The results of typical studies are summarized under four main heads: 1. Social organization.-There is gradual progress from the solitary and parallel play of the infant through the co-operative play of the child to the organized and differentiated social life of the adolescent. 2. Social attachments.-As age increases, the selective character of children's…

Personality organization in children
Examples are given showing that the personality of young children is often misinterpreted since the adult projects his views back upon the child's characteristics. The child is considered to have a personality system. It has capacity to resist deformation, stress, and trauma. It has also the capacity for self-repair and readjustment. Whatever affects the child must enter the field of forces in which he is reacting. Personality becomes organized a…

The Relationship between Change in Educational Attainment and Fertility Rates in Taiwan
Using vital statistics data for 1966 on age-education-specific marital fertility rates and comparable data drawn from a sample of Taiwanese women in 1971, the author computes the separate effects of changes in marital fertility, proportions married, age distribution, and educational distribution on changes in the crude birth rate and the fertility rate between 1966 and 1971. The changing educational distribution appears to have been fairly import…
