This article addresses the long-standing question of why students and faculty remain resistant to active learning. Comparing passive lectures with active learning using a randomized experimental approach and identical course materials, …

  • Anna Akhmatova’s “An Old Portrait” and the Ballets Russes

    Kelly Miller, Kelly E Miller•ARTICLE•Canadian Slavonic Papers•2005

The unspecified visual art referent in Akhmatova's enigmatic poem, "An Old Portrait" (Staryi portret, 1910), dedicated to the painter Aleksandra Ekster, has long inspired critical speculation. scholars (superfin and Timenchik, Rosslyn, Rubins) have proposed numerous readings, but none has entirely resolved the poem's mysteries. I will argue that the ballets Le Pavillon d'Armide and Cléopâtre, performed in the first Paris season of the Ballets Rus…

  • The Reorganization of the Higher Education of the Negro in Light of Changing Conditions

Kelly Miller•ARTICLE•The Journal of Negro Education•1936

The old dispensation with spiritual motive and moral zeal is giving way to the new order with its more concrete and material demands. The old bottle is already cracking under the fermentation of the new wine. The outbursts and rumors of commotion in the principal institutions of higher learning for Negroes are but rumblings caused by internal readjustments whic…

Time is a continuous quantity. The present is but a point separating the future from the past. The story of the Negro college calls for integral treatment, including yesterday, today and tomorrow. I must first qualify as an expert to discuss the assigned topic. My actual life covers the whole history of educational endeavor for my race, while my active life, involving a period of over forty years, has been devoted to this cause. While I have been…
