Losing One's Memory in Early Alzheimer's Disease
A Heideggerian hermeneutical phenomenological research method was used to investigate the experience of memory loss in twelve individuals with early Alzheimer's disease or mild cognitive impairment. Data analysis proceeded as described by Diekelmann, Allen, and Tanner (1989), and incorporated the methods of Benner (1994), Thomas and Pollio (2002), and van Manen (1990). Religious Life in the USA: Community as a Key Bridge to Young Adults
The author essentially argues that religious life in the United States, because of rising median ages, must invite a new generation of young Catholics to enter its ranks. She confronts the major demographic argument that is used to refute the possibility of that happening, naming the large mean age difference that exists between members of most of the orders and the young-adult population. She unmasks four assertions that are typically cloaked by…
The Reweaving of Catholic Spiritual and Institutional Life
As we prepare to cross the bridge to the twenty-first century and to a new millennium, there is much analysis of the state of Catholicism in the United States. While the number of Catholics continues to increase, much of the analysis continues to focus on institutional decline, particularly of the priesthood and religious life and institutions dependent on them, such as schools and parishes. However, another phenomenon, more difficult to measure …

Circles of Hell: Jewish and Non-Jewish Victims of the Nazis
Some scholars refer to the relationship between the Jewish and the non-Jewish victims of the Holocaust as “the many circles of hell in Dante's Inferno.” The Jews occupy the center, with the other victims extending outward in concentric rings. Michael Berenbaum has argued that in order to comprehend the Jewish center, one must “fully probe the ripple effects as well as the indisputable core.” This article proposes a framework for teaching about th…
